In English we sometimes have two different words to express an idea that in your own language might have just one word. “Do” and “Make” are two words that are often used incorrectly by ESL students. But don’t worry — with this lesson, you’ll learn to use these words correctly! Be sure to print engVid’s Make & Do English Resource PDF
Thanks for your lesson. It was great and very useful.

I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Hi Jon,
That was great video. It removed some of my doubts. I got a question but it does not relate to his.
Which sentence is right?
It was the speaker, not his ideas, THAT has provoked the students to riot.
or
It was the speaker, not his ideas, WHO has provoked the students to riot.
Regards
Mubasshir
Mubasshir
hi, I’m not a guru.
But i’m pretty sure in that case It’s should be who. Because “That” not goes after a comma.
Hope it useful.

I check “do” for the following question. Why the correct answer is “all of the above”?
There is no verb in this sentence.
Can you please _____ the dishes?
do
wash
clean
all of the above
susan5258
all of the above means, it’s right to say or to write:
1)can you please do the dishes?
2)can you please wash the dishes?
3)can you please clean the dishes?
The verb, for making the question is CAN!
Fedu
Sometimes, as in other languages, there are many different words to say a similar thing.

– to do time
– to make time
thanks again Jon
raheem
“To do time” means to spend time in jail/prison after you have committed a crime. “To make time” means to give yourself time in a day to complete something that you need to do.
Jon
i m very happy. think this lesson is very nesasery for me, thank you very much

thanks jon u r so friendly
gonzo
I learnt a lot MAKE and DO…Thanks Jon
yanile7
thanks alot.can you pls tell us the different between take and have
nagla11
Perhaps it might be better understood by examples. Sometimes the words can be used interchangeably. For example, “I need to take/have a nap (short sleep).” Used differently… “I need to take my friend to the airport.” In this way “to take” is similar to ‘bring’. “My wife is going to have a baby.” We wouldn’t say ‘take’, because that would mean to bring and I want to say that she will give birth to a baby. These are just a few examples. I hope that helps.
Jon
thanks for help
nagla11
Hey guys i’d like to know how should i contact the teachers if i get a questions

Hi, Jon!
May you teach us when we use “to” and “for”?
I have never known which one to use.
Thank you.
clarice2011
These are prepositions and it would be difficult to give you all the ways we use them. You probably already use these words well in certain situations. Here’s one example. When you are travelling, we can say “to”. For example, I am going to Brazil. Here’s another…For example….
Jon
Hi, Jon! No problem. All language is built by the custom and usage, not by the logic. I am reading thin books to learn the using ways. Anyway, thank you a lot!
Clarice
sir jon, thank you. i am enlightened with the difference of do and make. i got out 5/5.

I am a new student.I love this lesson.
It make me clearly to use the word do & make in writing.
Can I use this sentence above?
Thank you for your answer.
sopharath99
No. Sorry, but you cannot. You could say: “Your lesson helped me to use the words ‘do’ and ‘make’.” You could also say “It makes me happy.” Or, “I write clearly.” ‘Clearly’ is an adverb that can modify a verb. “I write.” How do you write? You write clearly.
Jon
you have very wonderful way to explain comedy funny and we learnt a new from you.

I am glad to learn and can you give me a lot of examples! Thanks
Mr.Thanh
wow! Thanks for the lesson ^^
I can undertand.
nookbc07
how about did and do? I’m a bit confuse about this two words.
yunah
Do is present tense and did is past tense. For example: “I do my homework” (present tense — it’s a statement, fact, or something you ‘do’). “I did my homework” (past tense) means that you have completed this action and it is now finished.
Jon
Thank you I enjoyed the lesson

I feel a bit strange with you word “GAY”.Did you mean being happy?
wakeelahmedchanna23
oops.. common mistakes, especially EFL..
be careful when you type GUY n GAY..
because they have totally different meanings..
GUY –> can mean MAN
GAY –> can mean happy.. but can also mean homosexual.. :P

Hey dear, wanna ask something about active and passive,HERE IS A QUESTION,what will be the passive of this sentence.WHAT DO YOU WANT?(ACTIVE).so its passsive can be what IS WANTED BY YOU/is it right ?
simran96
Perhaps it is the way my brain works or the way I prefer to teach, but I think the active sentence is the best way to express your question. I feel as though you are thinking in terms of an exercise. English (and this is just my philosophy) should be understood in context and thought in this way. It will become very confusing if you break it down in terms of exercises. I hope that is helpful.
Jon
yaa dear,U are totally right I was Thinking in terms of exercise,,,english seems to be very difficult,,But i will keep learning,AND i hope u will always help me whenever i need help, thanks sir,,,,actually in our exam we get many of the questions of active and passive,,like there is an active sentence ,”I go to school”,,so we cannot make its passive ,because Go is an intransitive verb,so many times I get confuse in it,,Can you please help me out in this,,,with best regards ,,simran
simran96
you are great uttering thanks is not enough for someone like you
lyn
In ur second question of quiz, how here its all above,WHAT IS THE MEANING OF cAN YOU PLEASE DO THE DISHES?NOT GETTING THIS DEAR,PLZ EXPLAIN ME
simran96
To do the dishes means to clean the dishes. Your mom, for example might tell you to please do the dishes.
Jon
Still not getting,,do iz something to do some work,,can”t we say wash the dishes, instead of DO the dishes,,is it sounds right?I have no objection about your quiz question,i am just asking because I m not getting it ,i want to know for my knowledge,,Hope You understand SIr,,
simran96
hi simran,
wash the dishes –> standard way of saying.
do the dishes –> expression n other way of saying it, but it has the same meaning.
if you want to speak like the native, you might start using other way of saying something, not translating directly from your original language.
these happen a lot to my students as well.
hope it helps.. ;)
gimmehunny
hi! i have a question. when you say ” i do exercise ” are you talking about a physical activity? because i think it is ” i exercise ” wich is the correct one? or is it the same in both ideas?
michael
They’re essentially the same. In fact, I would usually say that I exercise.
Jon
thank you teacher, very good lesson indeed

First of all, please don’t write all in Capitals. In writing language it means that you are yelling or screaming, like this.. AAAAAAHHH.. and it’s not polite.
But if you write like this.. aaaahhh.. sounds like a relieve.. right?
That’s why it becomes very different.. ;)

Hi! Thanks so much for your videos, they’re really helpful! But can I ask you something about DO and MAKE? This has been bothering me for a while… Well, I’m an artist and I’m wondering which one is right: “I MADE this drawing/painting” or “I DID this drawing”? I kinda think it should be “MADE” because it’s about creating something, but I hear people saying “I did this (painting)” all the time, which is confusing! Could you please, please tell me which one is right or if they’re both right? It’d be a lot of help!

However let me make a clarification: respect to the word money. There is other verb that is applied to that word too. It´s “collect”.
So you can say: make money, earn money and collect money, too.
Good bye teacher.
Have a good one

Thank you!
I have to do an assignment and I have problems with that. My teacher asked us to find words that can go with DO and MAKE at the same time, but they mean different things. She gave us an example of ‘Do/make time’, which was easy to find. Anyways, she said ‘Do/make friends’ too and I can’t find anything like ‘do friends’. I don’t know, is that even possible to say?

Hi Jon,
That was great video. It removed some of my doubts. I got a question but it does not relate to his.
Which sentence is right?
It was the speaker, not his ideas, THAT has provoked the students to riot.
or
It was the speaker, not his ideas, WHO has provoked the students to riot.

I check “do” for the following question. Why the correct answer is “all of the above”?
There is no verb in this sentence.
Can you please _____ the dishes?
do
wash
clean
all of the above
all of the above means, it’s right to say or to write:
1)can you please do the dishes?
2)can you please wash the dishes?
3)can you please clean the dishes?
The verb, for making the question is CAN!
Sometimes, as in other languages, there are many different words to say a similar thing.

You’re welcome.
thank you teacher , it is really helpful :)
hi Jon
can explain and give me examples about:
– to do time
– to make time
thanks again Jon
“To do time” means to spend time in jail/prison after you have committed a crime. “To make time” means to give yourself time in a day to complete something that you need to do.
i m very happy. think this lesson is very nesasery for me, thank you very much
thanks jon u r so friendly
I learnt a lot MAKE and DO…Thanks Jon
thanks alot.can you pls tell us the different between take and have
Perhaps it might be better understood by examples. I hope that helps.
thanks for help
Hey guys i’d like to know how should i contact the teachers if i get a questions
Just ask me.
Hello Jon. Thanks for really good lessons. Is it possible to do one about usage in different sentences such words as “maybe”, “might be”, “probably” and other similar? Thanks an advance. Best regards. Natalie.

Hi, Jon!
May you teach us when we use “to” and “for”?
I have never known which one to use.
Thank you.
These are prepositions and it would be difficult to give you all the ways we use them. You probably already use these words well in certain situations. Here’s one example. When you are travelling, we can say “to”. For example, I am going to Brazil. Here’s another…For example….
Hi, Jon! No problem. All language is built by the custom and usage, not by the logic. I am reading thin books to learn the using ways. Anyway, thank you a lot!
sir jon, thank you. i am enlightened with the difference of do and make. i got out 5/5.
Dear, Jon

Hi Jon, It is very interesting lesson ,I was really interested to watch it. Keep going. Your lessons are my FAVORITES.
I am a new student.I love this lesson.
It make me clearly to use the word do & make in writing.
Can I use this sentence above?
Thank you for your answer.
No. Sorry, but you cannot. You could say: “Your lesson helped me to use the words ‘do’ and ‘make’.” You could also say “It makes me happy.” Or, “I write clearly.” ‘Clearly’ is an adverb that can modify a verb. “I write.” How do you write? You write clearly.
you have very wonderful way to explain comedy funny and we learnt a new from you.

I don’t agree with the results of the quiz. There must be a mistake. Please fix it.
Hi Jon
that’s great lecture about do and make, u r doing great job for mankind….
Great lesson thanks jon
I got a one mistake.nice jon, explaination and with actions.
thanks.
Wonderfull lesson. Thank you so much jon.
Great website, good job fellas
I am glad to learn and can you give me a lot of examples! Thanks
wow! Thanks for the lesson ^^
I can undertand.
how about did and do? I’m a bit confuse about this two words.
Do is present tense and did is past tense. For example: “I do my homework” (present tense — it’s a statement, fact, or something you ‘do’). “I did my homework” (past tense) means that you have completed this action and it is now finished.
Thank you I enjoyed the lesson
thank you many :)
that’s great lecture about do and make, and give us more example about it .
thanks JON :)
thank you Jon, I always have a really big problem with these two words and expressions with them! I think it will be good if I learn them by heart :)
it is really a great help….
Thanks for your lesson!
THANK YOU MR JON IT WAS FUN AND A GREAT TAECHING YOU ARE AWESOME GAY SO THANKS FOR THE HELP :)
I feel a bit strange with you word “GAY”.Did you mean being happy?
oops.. common mistakes, especially EFL..
be careful when you type GUY n GAY..
because they have totally different meanings..
GUY –> can mean MAN
GAY –> can mean happy.. but can also mean homosexual.. :P
Very good.Thank you a lot.
thank you very very much
thanks a lot JON you are the best teacher in the world
Thank you a lot for the lesson!
Thank you very much Jon. I think your accent is very clear ( for me at less ). I don’t know why ! …. Maybe because you speak slowly ?
Thanks Jon very much. it’s very useful. And it’s very petty when i visited this website too late.
Hi Jon,
With the word changes do we use the word do or make? Please explain the reason. For example, do we make a change or we do a change?
Thanks.
Make a change. For example, I need to make some changes in my life.

Hi,Jon
This lesson helpful for me.
Thank you very much
Hey dear, wanna ask something about active and passive,HERE IS A QUESTION,what will be the passive of this sentence.WHAT DO YOU WANT?(ACTIVE).so its passsive can be what IS WANTED BY YOU/is it right ?
Perhaps it is the way my brain works or the way I prefer to teach, but I think the active sentence is the best way to express your question. I feel as though you are thinking in terms of an exercise. English (and this is just my philosophy) should be understood in context and thought in this way. It will become very confusing if you break it down in terms of exercises. I hope that is helpful.
yaa dear,U are totally right I was Thinking in terms of exercise,,,english seems to be very difficult,,But i will keep learning,AND i hope u will always help me whenever i need help, thanks sir,,,,actually in our exam we get many of the questions of active and passive,,like there is an active sentence ,”I go to school”,,so we cannot make its passive ,because Go is an intransitive verb,so many times I get confuse in it,,Can you please help me out in this,,,with best regards ,,simran
you are great uttering thanks is not enough for someone like you
In ur second question of quiz, how here its all above,WHAT IS THE MEANING OF cAN YOU PLEASE DO THE DISHES?NOT GETTING THIS DEAR,PLZ EXPLAIN ME
To do the dishes means to clean the dishes. Your mom, for example might tell you to please do the dishes.
Still not getting,,do iz something to do some work,,can”t we say wash the dishes, instead of DO the dishes,,is it sounds right?I have no objection about your quiz question,i am just asking because I m not getting it ,i want to know for my knowledge,,Hope You understand SIr,,
hi simran,
wash the dishes –> standard way of saying.
do the dishes –> expression n other way of saying it, but it has the same meaning.
if you want to speak like the native, you might start using other way of saying something, not translating directly from your original language.
these happen a lot to my students as well.
hope it helps.. ;)
hi! i have a question. when you say ” i do exercise ” are you talking about a physical activity? because i think it is ” i exercise ” wich is the correct one? or is it the same in both ideas?
They’re essentially the same. In fact, I would usually say that I exercise.
thank you teacher, very good lesson indeed

Thanks alot

Hi Jhon Thanks for the lesson. I can do my english homework with the explanation.
