Learn these common business English phrasal verbs with OFF that will help you understand business and financial discussions in English. These phrasal verbs might even save you some money! I’ll teach you the meaning of phrasal verbs like: lay off, rip off, write off, take off, and more.
9/10 So, write off means to reduce the estimated value of something. I will know it.))
poslegg
My mistake, too.
If I understood when the product is selling off his price can be written off to stimulate the sales as well. I think that “to write off” means reduce the price, while “to sell off” means to stimulate the sales. Am I right?
claudio77
When I said that “to write off” means reduce the price, I mean It reduce the price by another cause different of only to sell off the product. I think that I could sell off something using another marketing plan to improve the sales, even though I hadn’t reduced the price, couldn’t I? Or can I just say “to sell off” when the product were with your price reduced?
claudio77
sell off- you can sell off because of different reasons.. maybe you need urgent money, you have to pay your employee s salary or you want to release your old product and to buy new model.
fakhranda
my understanding on write off is not similar to sell off, i think this phrase in business relates to reducing or waiving taxation by the government to encourage buyers to buy materials or items
Alimna
In my opinion it means obliterated(it was completely destroyed) in this case
Client Park
In this case I think “write off” means to renounce at the value of that car considering it as a total loss (it was completely destroyed).
arinamg
Sell off- means that you have to sell your products cheaper than its worths becaue you need urgent money or you have any reason to get urgent money
fakhranda
I know.I was speaking about “write off”
arinamg
Yes! You’re correct. Excellent expalnation!
Wellington Porto Brito
Yes! You’re correct. Excellent explanation!
Wellington Porto Brito
Its means to reduce the estimated value of something according to the depreciation of this object , so you can write off the depreciation value of your car :)
SaNNoFa
I made the same mistake and I did also get 9/10. That is a good score though.
juliandap
I got 7/10. I need some review :)
Noureddine73
It means something like “списать”, “списать в расходы”

Hi, James!
Another terrific class. The Engvid is taking off in Brazil. Every day I have seen so many brazilians students in the comments and so I thank you guys twice. Your is the finest job about english in the web!
This time I put 9/10 in the quizz. The question about to write off the value car really got me. But, late, I understood my wrong.
See u, guys!
claudio77
Hey Claudio, i’m form Brazil too, i heard about Engvid about 1 month ago and i really like it.
And you made some mistake.
“This time I put(GOT) 9/10”
“But, late(later), I understood my wrong(mistake).”
tulioaraujo
and my mistake was sell off istead of write off..
sell off is correct for the fist sentence, but later when we pay attention to the sequence of the accidents, we can realise that write off is right.
We are going to have to _________ the value of that car. I think it was completely destroyed in the accident.
write off
fakhranda
I like your new photo, James. You look serious ;)

glauzuki
“Sell off” means to sell at a low price. You can sell “the car” but not “the value” of the car, like in the question. But you can “write off the value of that car” which means you give up on the value of that car, because it is completely destroyed.
arinamg
Hi Glauzuki,
the car was damaged, so they have to decrease or reduce or cut down (or write off) its value now.
Radoslav
