“The leg of the dog” or “the dog’s leg”? “England’s role” or “the role of England”? “Almost all students” or “almost all of the students”? In this lesson, I’ll teach you when to use the preposition ‘of’. Although it’s a small word, mastering ‘of’ is a challenge for many students. Let’s solve the mystery of the word ‘of’ together.
Hi You are one of the best teacher.I am really learning.Thanks.

Ben
come on! There is always NO DUMB question! I didn’t pay much attention to this question before. But i am clear after ekobudis talked about it.
lahoo
For most words in English, we add an s to make them plural. For example, dog becomes dogs. There are some exceptions to this rule. People is one of the exceptions.
singular = person
plural = people
I saw a person near my house last night (only 1). I saw people near my house last night (2 or more).

thanks dear Emma, it was really helpful lesson,

emma I’ve one question?
what are differences
lots of and
lot of
abdelle
‘Lot of’ is incorrect. We can say that we have lots of food. We can’t say that we have lot of food.
Emma
Thanks a lot emma
Abdelle
The right thing there would be “a lot of food” or “lots of food”.Because we should include the article “a” before the word “lot” in singular. Is it correct?
dsilva179
Exactly!
We can either use ‘lots of’ or ‘a lot of’. Keep an eye out for the video I’ve made on this subject. It should be posted soon.

Hi, Emma
There’s a thing that I don’t understand. You say ‘of the’ is used with things and objects that are not alive. Most of your lessons begin with ‘Hi there, my name’s _____ and in today’s lesson we’re gonna talk about….’. Today is not alive, I don’t understand…
Thanks
Ruben
Great question Ruben! We usually use ‘s with today, yesterday, tomorrow, etc.
As you probably know, in English there are always exceptions to rules. When showing possession, using ‘s or ‘of the’ are both grammatically correct. This lesson looked at the situations where ‘s was more common than ‘of the’. Again, there are always exceptions to these rules.

I estated studying English “seriously” four months ago, and the best material I’ve found is yours. The content is very good, it’s wonderful to listen to you for a few minutes. The best thing for me (and for my English level) is your language. Typical English lessons from others webs are very simply, and films are too difficult for me. Your level and your way of speaking is just I need. Thank you!!!!
Ruben
Thanks Ruben and everyone else who has left comments. I find them very helpful.

emma i think the sentence ‘lots of animal live in the zoo’ is wrong there should be word ‘animal’ instead of ‘animals’ because there is ‘lots’ and i have learnt in a grammar book that when we use lots then we do not use plural form.
rohit
When we use ‘lots of’ or ‘a lot of’ the noun that follows is in the plural form if it is a countable noun.
Eg, There were a lot of animals in the zoo.
Animal is a countable noun. So we pluralize it with ‘a lot of’. For uncountable nouns like furniture, we don’t pluralize the noun.
Eg) I have a lot of furniture.
We have videos on countable and uncountable nouns on the site. I recommend watching them. Here is the link.
all of this video are good but SOUND IS COMING BEFORE ACTION. Sound is coming first, lip movement coming next. Please overcome this problem

med1
Hi, Emma thank you for the lesson. It was excellent. I have a question I want you to solve: If I say, “all my friends are lazy”. Is it coorect?
jx
It’s correct! I hope it’s not true. :)
The ‘of’ is only really necessary with pronouns (eg, us, you, him, her, it, them)
Here are some examples:
1) All of us should visit the school. (Pronoun ‘us’ = all of)
2) I need to eat all of them. (Pronoun ‘them’ = all of)
Hope that helps!
Emma
Hi Emma. Thank you for this interesting lesson. For the last question from jx, from my point of view, he or she was not speaking in general. So for me “all of my friends are lazy” respect the rule specific versus general. AM I wrong?
sylvie de T
Emma, you are a great teacher. I like you a lot. Uaau? What this a lot means? Is this quantity?
crebio
Hi Crebio,
‘A lot’ means a great extent or a large quantity. It’s the opposite of ‘a little’. It can be both a noun and an adverb.
In the sentence, ‘I like you a lot’, a lot is the adverb. It describes the verb and means you especially like me.
Here are some other examples of ‘a lot’ as an adverb.
I read a lot. = I read often and/ or I read a large quantity.
I swim a lot. = I swim often.
I eat a lot. = I eat a large quantity and/ or I eat often.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
Emma

Emma
Hi Emma, i saw your lesson about possession with OF, it was very helpfully and thanks, but I still have a question that is for example: how do say a phrase like this one: “A mug of beer” or “A beer mug” What is the right way? Is not possession and is not quantity, in this case the mug has beer inside. Other example is: “a soup plate” or “a plate of soup”
cabaaso76
Hi cabaaso,
This is an excellent question. Let me use the idea of a teacup and a cup of tea to explain the difference. When we talk about teacups, we are talking about a type of cup. ‘Teacup’ is a noun. I have teacups, but I don’t always fill them with tea. Sometimes I drink milk from them, and sometimes I use them as decoration. However, if I have a cup of tea, I have a cup and it is filled with tea. This means that I have both the cup and the tea in it to drink.
Here are some more examples:
1) A soup plate = noun (specific type of plate used specifically for serving soup) eg. For Christmas, I bought my mother a soup plate. She loved it.
2) A plate of soup = there is a plate with soup in it eg. The dog knocked over the plate of soup. What a mess!
3) A beer bottle = noun (specific type of bottle) eg. I need to recycle the empty beer bottles.
4) A bottle of beer = there is a bottle with beer in it eg. Would you like a bottle of beer or a pint?
Emma
Thanks a lot

I have an upcoming video on this subject. It will probably be up in the coming month, so be on the lookout for it.

I think there is maybe a mistake in the quiz, wich is:
“‘a’ is the preferable sentence” or
“‘b’ is the preferable sentence”
actually there is no letters to make diffrence between the first and secound answer, only numbers 1 and 2.
Thanks to correst me about the way i used to describe it, iam learning english by myself.

Hello, Emma. I have a qestion. Should I write “people‘s“ or “people‘“ if I want to say that people own something? Create , please a lesson for me about few- some-any. One more question if you are not against: how can I make my vocabulary better?
milly45
Hi Milly,
Use an ‘s, eg. People’s rights include freedom of expression.
In terms of your question on vocabulary, make a goal to learn five new words a day. Try to write two sentences for each word you learn, and review the words often.
I will have more videos on vocabulary soon, so stay tuned.
Thanks for the lesson suggestion!
Emma
Thank you, Emma, your answer is realy helpful! You are the best teacher, realy!

Hey Emma! I have a question. Don’t we have to use ” a great deal of” with uncountable nouns?
mockingjay
Hi Mockingjay,
You’re right! Thank you for catching that. ‘A great deal of’ is an expression used with uncountable nouns.
Emma
an excelente class,
I have a question,
I could say as the first sentence and second
All of my restaurants receive rich people
or All of my parents make a lot of my
That last frase you wrote
All of my friends
I wanted to know if I could substitute the first and the second
instead of I write “” of the “”
I would say, “” Of my”
I wait your answer,
adriano
Hi Adriano,
Thank you for your question.
You can use either ‘of the’ or ‘of my’ depending on your meaning.
For people and animals who have a relationship with you, (eg, friends, teachers, family, pets) or for things that you own, use ‘all of my’, eg. all of my friends, all of my teachers, all of my shirts.
Emma
correcting the second frase
All of my parents make a lot of money.
adriano
If you have two parents or are talking about two things, use ‘both’ instead of ‘all’.
Both of my parents make a lot of money.
Emma
nice way to express
amin
it is a superb lesson. i really appreciate for that, i have one question that using “of” why we do not need “s” A lot of but why we add ‘s’ for example “Lots of”
victor
Hi Victor,
Great question! I don’t quite know the answer to that, but my guess is it just has to do with the history of the language. There may not be a logical reason.
Emma

Dear Emma, Could You think of making a video about propper usage of ‘a’ and ‘the’. Many times during writing texts in English I have problem with this. As far as I know a lot of other foreign speakers have a problem with it too. It’s just because we don’t have such thing in our languages. Please. It would be very helpful.
Przemek
Hi Przemek,
Articles (eg, the and a) are difficult to learn because of all of the rules and exceptions to the rules. You are not alone in having trouble with these.
Thanks ms. emma. I got perfect score. Nice lesson.

Hi teacher~
Which sentence is better?
1. Canada’s biggest cities are Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal.
2. The biggest cities of Canada are Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal.
1 – For countries, we prefer using ‘s.
2 – For countries, we prefer using ‘of the’.
martinchen
Hi martinchen,
When talking about countries, it’s better to use ‘s, so the first example is the preferable one.
Emma
Dear Emma,
I have just watched your lesson, but now I am on two minds about the using of “a great deal of”. In my grammar book written by L.G Alexander and pressed by Longman, the phrase only use for uncountable nouns, but in your lesson you used it with “Students” – a countable noun. So please!give me a bit more about how to use ” a great deal of ” exactly!
Hieu
Hi Hieu,
Thanks for catching this mistake. “A great deal of” is used with uncountable nouns. Sorry for the confusion.
Emma
Thanks a lot Mrs. Emma for your breave in admission.

Hi Emma, I’d like to ask why there’s no “to” after the word “help” in sentences like: “He helped me do it.”, etc. Is there a specific rule about it? I asked a couple of my American friends and they don’t seem to know why it’s like that either. Thanks for your help!

Hi Sunny,
Thank you for posting this. ‘World’ is another example of when it is better to use ‘s.
Here is the updated list for ‘s:
Person, group of people, organization, country, animal, time (eg, today’s date, yesterday’s news), and world (eg, the world’s ugliest dog).

at starting of explanation of dog and chair example you raised a question which was “whose leg’s of it?” and u answered it.
did u say “it’s chair’s leg”? or it’s my listening mistake? if you said “it’s chair’s leg” then chair is a object.then how can use ‘s.please explain me.

Dear Emma, many thanks for this tutorial on “of”. Sometimes I read that people use a phase like “noun of adj”. Here is one example. “The public have become the recipients of a plethora of hedonistic, high profile buildings for culture and leisure that have been stimulated by Lottery funding and the perceived need to mark the millennium.” Could you explain this?

hi,miss emma, the reason why I am writing you is because I would like to know why when people use the verb to clean they add the preposition out? for example: my sister had to clean the house out. why it is used (out) if you can say only clean.this happends with many others verbs and prepositions even with away.so what I mean is why I have to use (out) or( away) if the verbs without the prepositions mean the same. please help me and tell me how good is my writing

Hi Emma, Please I have a question!
Almost all needs ‘of the’ when we are talking about a specific group. It does not need ‘of the’ when we are talking about a general group.
For example:
1. Almost all students studied hard.
2. Almost all of the president studied hard.
It that right Emma ? student is a normal group name and president is a special group name. Please Thanks

Thanks Emma, Can I ask a question?
What’s the difference between “all of students” and “all of the student”. In your lecture, most of the example sentences with “of” mean specific objects, so they also used with “the”. However, in the quiz No.5, the correct answer is “A lot of students study abroad.” I thought the sentence would be “A lot students..” OR “A lot of the students..”.
I think I’m confused OF with OF THE.
I’m looking forward getting your answer, please.
Thanks always.
sarah2013
Emma, I watched the lesson again and I understood most of them. So, I want to change my question a little bit. Sadly, I’m might not allowed to edit my formal question, so, Here it is.
I’m confused using of only “OF” with “OF THE”.
For example,
1. Many dogs are cute.–> general
2. Many of dogs are cute.—> ?
3. Many of the dogs are cute. —> specific.
Are these three sentences correct?
Is No.2 general meaning or specific?
I’m looking forward your answer. Thanks again.

Dear Emma,
I am confused above. I check the second explain, and there is no “the” before Canada, but i don’t quite understand why the second option is right

Hello,
At first I want to thank you amd all the teachers of ENGVid Emma. My question will be about a usage of the “of” that makes me confused a lot. Here are the examples:
1- “If you paint the same face, and
set a winged rose or a rose of gold somewhere about
her, one’s thoughts are of her immortal sisters, Piety
and Jealousy, and of her mother, Ancestral Beauty, and
of her high kinsmen, the Holy Orders, whose swords
make a continual music before her face.” The “of” makes me confused in this sentence is one that was used after the verb to be, so, “one’s thoughts are of her immortal sisters”.
2-The title of this book echoes that of Roy Bhaskar, “A Realist Theory of Science,
and this immodest act is homage to an important work that gave impetus to the
movement of Critical Realism to which my work contributes.” and it’s the second example I couldn’t get the purpose of the “of” (specifically “echoes that of Roy Bhaskar”) I hope it hasn’t been too long. Thank you in advance. :)

What’s the meaning of deal Emma? I mean in your expression A great deal of students?
Maripaz Maldonado
“A great deal of…” is an idiom that means “a lot of…” or “many”. It is a little more common in British English. So a great deal of students means many students.

Thanks Emma for your lesson…:)
But I want to ask you a question…
In example, you write:
A number of people study English
Why did you use “people” word not “peoples” as plural word…?
Does “people” word have the same word in single and plural word…?
Please help me…I’m still confused about this word…
dumbest question on the forum
come on! There is always NO DUMB question! I didn’t pay much attention to this question before. But i am clear after ekobudis talked about it.
For most words in English, we add an s to make them plural. For example, dog becomes dogs. There are some exceptions to this rule. People is one of the exceptions.
singular = person
plural = people
I saw a person near my house last night (only 1). I saw people near my house last night (2 or more).
thanks dear Emma, it was really helpful lesson,
hello ema, thank u alot for ur teaching but i don’t understand almost all on yor quiz? why that is false? maybe its mean be a specific group of student so we can put almost all of the students?
Wow, this is a really great question which I never knew before. and thanks for answering Emma. you are one of my favorite English teachers! Cheers! :)
Thank you Emma, this lesson is very much useful.
:)
thank you Good job
great work, thanks:-)
Nice job, Emma! :)
thank you for all your help!
emma I’ve one question?
what are differences
lots of and
lot of
‘Lot of’ is incorrect. We can say that we have lots of food. We can’t say that we have lot of food.
Thanks a lot emma
The right thing there would be “a lot of food” or “lots of food”.Because we should include the article “a” before the word “lot” in singular. Is it correct?
Exactly!
We can either use ‘lots of’ or ‘a lot of’. Keep an eye out for the video I’ve made on this subject. It should be posted soon.
Teacher Emma;
would you mind explaning “that clause” in that case I will be able to accomplish the my nightmare ?
thanks emma.
thank you very much !!! Your lessons are really very helpful !!!
Thanks Emma, Sometimes I think that is easy , but when I try of complite the quiz is necesary reviuw some topic

thank you very much Emma, You’re a good teacher for me.God bless you..
hello! Teacher Emma, please teach me how to use for,and in.thanks a lot…
Hi, Emma
There’s a thing that I don’t understand. You say ‘of the’ is used with things and objects that are not alive. Most of your lessons begin with ‘Hi there, my name’s _____ and in today’s lesson we’re gonna talk about….’. Today is not alive, I don’t understand…
Thanks
Great question Ruben! We usually use ‘s with today, yesterday, tomorrow, etc.
As you probably know, in English there are always exceptions to rules. When showing possession, using ‘s or ‘of the’ are both grammatically correct. This lesson looked at the situations where ‘s was more common than ‘of the’. Again, there are always exceptions to these rules.
hi Emma why you don’t talk to me ?
do you hate me ?

مرحبا، يا حبيبتي

I estated studying English “seriously” four months ago, and the best material I’ve found is yours. The content is very good, it’s wonderful to listen to you for a few minutes. The best thing for me (and for my English level) is your language. Typical English lessons from others webs are very simply, and films are too difficult for me. Your level and your way of speaking is just I need. Thank you!!!!
Thanks Ruben and everyone else who has left comments. I find them very helpful.
Hi Emma ,

A really great lesson. Thanks a lot!!
hi there, most of us love the way u teach english. you r so kind Emma. come back soon 4 another free lesson please.
emma i think the sentence ‘lots of animal live in the zoo’ is wrong there should be word ‘animal’ instead of ‘animals’ because there is ‘lots’ and i have learnt in a grammar book that when we use lots then we do not use plural form.
Here is the link.
https://www.engvid.com/countable-uncountable-nouns-english-grammar/
all of this video are good but SOUND IS COMING BEFORE ACTION. Sound is coming first, lip movement coming next. Please overcome this problem
all is nice but SOUND COMING BEFORE ACTION. Sound is coming first, lip movement coming next. Please overcome that problem. Its nice

Dear EMMA, I haven’t seen and read as like this lesson, Thank you
Thanks Emma, highly interesting lesson
thanks. It is very informative lecture !
Thank you about the lesson I have learn a lots from you
Hi, Emma thank you for the lesson. It was excellent. I have a question I want you to solve: If I say, “all my friends are lazy”. Is it coorect?
It’s correct! I hope it’s not true. :)
The ‘of’ is only really necessary with pronouns (eg, us, you, him, her, it, them)
Here are some examples:
1) All of us should visit the school. (Pronoun ‘us’ = all of)
2) I need to eat all of them. (Pronoun ‘them’ = all of)
Hope that helps!
Hi Emma. Thank you for this interesting lesson. For the last question from jx, from my point of view, he or she was not speaking in general. So for me “all of my friends are lazy” respect the rule specific versus general. AM I wrong?
Emma, you are a great teacher. I like you a lot. Uaau? What this a lot means? Is this quantity?
Hi Crebio,
‘A lot’ means a great extent or a large quantity.
THAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANK YYYYYYYYOOOOOOUUUUU EMMMMMMA USEFUL LESSONE WE NEED YOU ALOT (:
you are awesome, good job and knock’m dead :)) I scored 7 out of 7,best regards ,I thank you from Azerbaijan! )
Well done!
Hi cabaaso,
This is an excellent question.
Thanks a lot
i have one story one month ago,i went to the botcher,i asked him to give me 4 chicken’s legs, but i said why i can’t tel him i need 4 legs of chicken,

Hi Emma i have to ask a question as you told that we can’t use ‘lot of’ but can we use ‘a lot of’?
Hi Harsh singh,
Thanks for your question.
‘A lot of’ is fine to use (eg, I have a lot of books). ‘Lots of’ is also correct.
I have an upcoming video on this subject. It will probably be up in the coming month, so be on the lookout for it.
Thank you very much Emma,I like your lessons.

Thank you very much for your lessons, really helpfull.

Hi Milly,
Use an ‘s, eg. People’s rights include freedom of expression.
In terms of your question on vocabulary, make a goal to learn five new words a day. Try to write two sentences for each word you learn, and review the words often.
I will have more videos on vocabulary soon, so stay tuned.
Thanks for the lesson suggestion!
Thank you, Emma, your answer is realy helpful! You are the best teacher, realy!
Hey Emma! I have a question. Don’t we have to use ” a great deal of” with uncountable nouns?
Hi Mockingjay,
You’re right! Thank you for catching that. ‘A great deal of’ is an expression used with uncountable nouns.
an excelente class,
I have a question,
I could say as the first sentence and second
All of my restaurants receive rich people
or All of my parents make a lot of my
That last frase you wrote
All of my friends
I wanted to know if I could substitute the first and the second
instead of I write “” of the “”
I would say, “” Of my”
I wait your answer,
Hi Adriano,
Thank you for your question.
You can use either ‘of the’ or ‘of my’ depending on your meaning.
For people and animals who have a relationship with you, (eg, friends, teachers, family, pets) or for things that you own, use ‘all of my’, eg. all of my friends, all of my teachers, all of my shirts.
correcting the second frase
All of my parents make a lot of money.
If you have two parents or are talking about two things, use ‘both’ instead of ‘all’.
Both of my parents make a lot of money.
nice way to express
it is a superb lesson. i really appreciate for that, i have one question that using “of” why we do not need “s” A lot of but why we add ‘s’ for example “Lots of”
Hi Victor,
Great question! I don’t quite know the answer to that, but my guess is it just has to do with the history of the language. There may not be a logical reason.
thanx
thank u emma but i understand little enlish grammer my english is very week please help me emma
thanks I really benefited from this lesson
Hi emma, how are you doing? I would like to ask a favour, could you upload a video regarding “what tense to use when talking about past experiences” as well as “how to talk about the past” it correct to use past tense to talk about the past, but i’ve seen people use present tense for the past,im pretty confused,i’d appreciate it if you could help me out, :) btw ur hot

wow! good lesson teacher Emma thnks
Thank you,Emma! It was very clear!
Hi Przemek,
Articles (eg, the and a) are difficult to learn because of all of the rules and exceptions to the rules. You are not alone in having trouble with these.
Here’s one of our videos on articles:
https://www.engvid.com/articles-in-english-how-to-use-a-an-and-the-properly/
this helps me a lot. thank you!
Thanks ms.

Hi martinchen,
When talking about countries, it’s better to use ‘s, so the first example is the preferable one.
Dear Emma,
I have just watched your lesson, but now I am on two minds about the using of “a great deal of”. In my grammar book written by L.G Alexander and pressed by Longman, the phrase only use for uncountable nouns, but in your lesson you used it with “Students” – a countable noun. So please!give me a bit more about how to use ” a great deal of ” exactly!
Hi Hieu,
Thanks for catching this mistake. “A great deal of” is used with uncountable nouns. Sorry for the confusion.
Thanks a lot Mrs. Emma for your breave in admission.
You are have a great personality.
thanks emma i am very glad to see your lesson
Very very interesting lesson,
Hi Emma, I’d like to ask why there’s no “to” after the word “help” in sentences like: “He helped me do it.”, etc. Is there a specific rule about it? I asked a couple of my American friends and they don’t seem to know why it’s like that either. Thanks for your help!
Hi guys,

my another question WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS.here the word world is not a person, not a country, not an animal…..but how we use WORLD’S?
Hi Sunny,
Thank you for posting this. ‘World’ is another example of when it is better to use ‘s.
Here is the updated list for ‘s:
Person, group of people, organization, country, animal, time (eg, today’s date, yesterday’s news), and world (eg, the world’s ugliest dog).

Dear Emma, many thanks for this tutorial on “of”. Sometimes I read that people use a phase like “noun of adj”. Here is one example. “The public have become the recipients of a plethora of hedonistic, high profile buildings for culture and leisure that have been stimulated by Lottery funding and the perceived need to mark the millennium.” Could you explain this?
thank you Emma.i would like to be your friend.

Hi Emma. Absolutely clear as usual for you. Many thanks! I’ll be waiting for your next lesson.

Thank you Emma! Another very useful class!
Thanks again.
verify articals. then it will easy.
Dear Emma,
The president of England (Does it correct? & Why)

Dear Emma,

“A great deal of…” is an idiom that means “a lot of…” or “many”. It is a little more common in British English. So a great deal of students means many students.
Great lesson
