come on! There is always NO DUMB question! I didn’t pay much attention to this question before. But i am clear after ekobudis talked about it.
For most words in English, we add an s to make them plural. For example, dog becomes dogs. There are some exceptions to this rule. People is one of the exceptions.
singular = person
plural = people
I saw a person near my house last night (only 1). I saw people near my house last night (2 or more).

Great question Ruben! We usually use ‘s with today, yesterday, tomorrow, etc.
As you probably know, in English there are always exceptions to rules. When showing possession, using ‘s or ‘of the’ are both grammatically correct. This lesson looked at the situations where ‘s was more common than ‘of the’. Again, there are always exceptions to these rules.

emma i think the sentence ‘lots of animal live in the zoo’ is wrong there should be word ‘animal’ instead of ‘animals’ because there is ‘lots’ and i have learnt in a grammar book that when we use lots then we do not use plural form.
When we use ‘lots of’ or ‘a lot of’ the noun that follows is in the plural form if it is a countable noun.
Eg, There were a lot of animals in the zoo.
Animal is a countable noun. So we pluralize it with ‘a lot of’. For uncountable nouns like furniture, we don’t pluralize the noun.

The ‘of’ is only really necessary with pronouns (eg, us, you, him, her, it, them)
Here are some examples:
1) All of us should visit the school. (Pronoun ‘us’ = all of)
2) I need to eat all of them. (Pronoun ‘them’ = all of)

‘A lot’ means a great extent or a large quantity. It’s the opposite of ‘a little’. It can be both a noun and an adverb.
In the sentence, ‘I like you a lot’, a lot is the adverb. It describes the verb and means you especially like me.
Here are some other examples of ‘a lot’ as an adverb.
I read a lot. = I read often and/ or I read a large quantity.
I swim a lot. = I swim often.
I eat a lot. = I eat a large quantity and/ or I eat often.

Hi Emma, i saw your lesson about possession with OF, it was very helpfully and thanks, but I still have a question that is for example: how do say a phrase like this one: “A mug of beer” or “A beer mug” What is the right way? Is not possession and is not quantity, in this case the mug has beer inside. Other example is: “a soup plate” or “a plate of soup”

This is an excellent question. Let me use the idea of a teacup and a cup of tea to explain the difference. When we talk about teacups, we are talking about a type of cup. ‘Teacup’ is a noun. I have teacups, but I don’t always fill them with tea. Sometimes I drink milk from them, and sometimes I use them as decoration. However, if I have a cup of tea, I have a cup and it is filled with tea. This means that I have both the cup and the tea in it to drink.
Here are some more examples:
1) A soup plate = noun (specific type of plate used specifically for serving soup) eg. For Christmas, I bought my mother a soup plate. She loved it.
2) A plate of soup = there is a plate with soup in it eg. The dog knocked over the plate of soup. What a mess!
3) A beer bottle = noun (specific type of bottle) eg. I need to recycle the empty beer bottles.
4) A bottle of beer = there is a bottle with beer in it eg. Would you like a bottle of beer or a pint?

Use an ‘s, eg. People’s rights include freedom of expression.
In terms of your question on vocabulary, make a goal to learn five new words a day. Try to write two sentences for each word you learn, and review the words often.

You can use either ‘of the’ or ‘of my’ depending on your meaning.
For people and animals who have a relationship with you, (eg, friends, teachers, family, pets) or for things that you own, use ‘all of my’, eg. all of my friends, all of my teachers, all of my shirts.

I thought that we cannot use article “the” with plural nouns but used. you said ” All of the students hate math”. Is this correct or it should be “All of Students hate math”?

Almost all needs ‘of the’ when we are talking about a specific group. It does not need ‘of the’ when we are talking about a general group.
For example:
1. Almost all students studied hard.
2. Almost all of the president studied hard.

What’s the difference between “all of students” and “all of the student”. In your lecture, most of the example sentences with “of” mean specific objects, so they also used with “the”. However, in the quiz No.5, the correct answer is “A lot of students study abroad.” I thought the sentence would be “A lot students..” OR “A lot of the students..”.

At first I want to thank you amd all the teachers of ENGVid Emma. My question will be about a usage of the “of” that makes me confused a lot. Here are the examples:
1- “If you paint the same face, and
set a winged rose or a rose of gold somewhere about
her, one’s thoughts are of her immortal sisters, Piety
and Jealousy, and of her mother, Ancestral Beauty, and
of her high kinsmen, the Holy Orders, whose swords
make a continual music before her face.” The “of” makes me confused in this sentence is one that was used after the verb to be, so, “one’s thoughts are of her immortal sisters”.
2-The title of this book echoes that of Roy Bhaskar, “A Realist Theory of Science,
and this immodest act is homage to an important work that gave impetus to the
movement of Critical Realism to which my work contributes.” and it’s the second example I couldn’t get the purpose of the “of” (specifically “echoes that of Roy Bhaskar”) I hope it hasn’t been too long. Thank you in advance. :)
