Oh, you’re too handsome ;) — Have you ever tried to give someone a compliment and watched their face squeeze tight because they think you’ve insulted them? You probably used “too” + an adjective. “Not enough” and “too much” are usually used to make negative comments. This lesson will show you how to avoid this embarrassing mistake. Not enough time, too much English!
Excellent lesson thanks teacher…. It was enough for now
juansala88
From Teacher Adam .. never is enough lessons, we need more :)
Greetings

thank you u lesson is so good

Thank you for the lesson. Have a good day.

As for number 6, shouldn’t the answer be:
I don’t know if Shane has *not enough* money to get in. I’ll go see if he’s at the entrance.
Fariz
In my opinion, your answer is correct only if in ended with “..i’ll go to search him around the hall” (sorry for my [bad] English…). If you say “I don’t know if he has not enough” you are telling to me you hope he hasn’t enough and so (in case he had got enough money and he has been able to get in) now you start to search him to get him out! On the other hand, if you say “I don’t know if he has enough….” you hope he has enough but you aren’t sure about it..so i’ll go see if he’s at entrance…and if he is still there..you’ll pay for him and come back to me together with him :-)
[p.s. I’ve just tried to tell something in English…can anyone say to me if it is grammatically correct?…and if the answer is correct too? Thank you…so much! :-)]
powerdork
Hi Fariz,
Actually, Powerdork answered it pretty well. The ‘don’t know’ in the sentence suggests the negative already. So if I don’t know if he has enough, suggests that I think he does not have enough, the not coming earlier.
Does that help?
Adam
hello Adam Iam a big fan of yours !
all binift us thanks alot
could u make alesson about TRANSCRIPTION pls
I have requested it many times!!
haboosh adil
I’ll go see if he’s at the entrance.
It seems to me that “to” is missing before the verb “see”.
Am I wrong?
Egghead
I think what are you trying to say is you don’t know if Shane has enough money to get in or Shane is just saying he/she has not enough money to get in and he really have more than enough or enough. Am i correct?
Actually, I am just practicing my English here. Lol.
Sir, feel free to correct my grammar.

teacher adam thank’s for lesson.but i’ve a question
why you must say too many criminals not too much criminals even criminals noun is countable.
abouhoma
Abouhoma, we have to use “to many” BECAUSE noun is countable.
“Many” is used with countable nouns (many people, many bulidings, many crimminals). “Much” is used with uncountable (too much water, too much money).
swierszczowa1
Hi Abouhoma,
As Kamila mentioned, we use ‘many’ with countables, ‘much’ with uncountables.
Hope that helps.

Q7. Why isn’t the answer “not enough?” I think this seems more suitable for the question. Does anybody can explain this? I will appreciate it.
endeavor
Because “not enough” would be a acceptable answer, but anyone thinks has “too much happy” in live(anyone complains that).
margaret
Hi Endeavor,
The key is in the word ‘difficult.’ Too much happiness is a complaint, right? Not many people would make this complaint. It would be difficult to do so. It would be easy to say “I don’t have enough happiness in my life.”
Does that help?
Adam
Thanks thousands. I misunderstood the sentence. At the second try I got it all. Happy holidays.
endeavor
Thank you very much! It was very nice.
mattosac
Thanks al lot! I am improving site the lessons
aracu
Thank you Margaret. I miss understood the sentence. Thanks, now It makes sense.
endeavor
Thank a lot for this lesson. I am still having some difficulty understanding these technical words but I will practicing as much as I can.
jair
Thanks sir very informative.
WAHID
7. It would be very difficult for anyone to complain that they have not enough happiness in life.
I reckon my answer’s apt enough too.
Is that good English?
bonhob
Hi Bonhoff,
Actually people make this complaint all the time. :)
The key is in the word ‘difficult.’ Too much happiness is a complaint, right? Not many people would make this complaint. It would be difficult to do so. It would be easy to say “I don’t have enough happiness in my life.”
Does that help?
Adam
Of course it does.
bonhob
In the Q3 I think that it is a little contradictory, isn’t it?
I think that, becouse you are sayin “a little too much”
In my lenguage there’re some contradictory phrases that people says just for customary(habit), is that the case?
Could anyone explain me that please
Thanks
pedrico
Hi Pedrico,
If I understand your question correctly, you are worried that the word ‘little’ contradicts “too much.” In fact, the word ‘little’ is an adverb that suggests the level of the complaint, not the level of the sweetness.
Does that help?
Adam
Yes that helped me. Thanks for the explanation Adam!!
pedrico
Hi Adam,
Nice lesson but i am still confused to use too much on question-7. I think ans could be “not enough”.
Vishnu
Hi Vishnu,
The key is in the word ‘difficult.’ Too much happiness is a complaint, right? Not many people would make this complaint. It would be difficult to do so. It would be easy to say “I don’t have enough happiness in my life.”
Does that help?
Adam
Dear all. Your quiz platform doesn’t run on my laptop equipped by Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 9. Clicking Next Question button the next quiz doesn’t appear. Which plug-in, I suppose, I need for solving my problem? Thank you very much.

bigboy85
gr8 lesson Adam thank ,,,
just some questions
can I use ^too much^ before an adjective or just too
e.g. The house would be too much expensive .
e.g. The houes would be too expensive .
which one is proper , or both of them are correct
also this : in the sense
thank you ,, you are too kind
does too in the sentence showed in negative way ??
hisham77
I found that “much” and “too” are switched when you put them before an adjective. But in this case, it isn’t necessary to use “much”, so you can simply drop it. And the person also said that “I’m afraid I can’t give the grammatical reasoning behind it, but it is fairly common to see “much too” before an adjective.”
So, considering your examples:
“The house would be much too expensive.”
“The house would be too expensive.”
morfik
immmm,,, I see
hisham77
Hi Hisham,
Morfik gives an excellent answer. You can say ‘much too expensive,’ where much is an intensity adverb that says something about the level of the complaint, not the price. If it’s too expensive, you already can’t afford it. But if it’s much too expensive, you won’t even consider borrowing.
Does that help?
Adam
yep,it help thanks million Adam .
hisham77
As for the second part, great question.
“You are much too kind”– This is technically negative, but in a way to be humble. It means you are more kind than necessary, but I appreciate it.
Adam
i am very happy thanks you
maribel de morhead
It was fine:)
aliz
Dear Adam,
I frequently see dashes as part of texts, and I am not sure, but I think that some of them are using to separate main ideas of secondary ones, and others are being used to build adjectives. Could you please help me clarify when and how I should use dashes in my sentences?
Regards and thanks in advance,
Luis
luiseduardo75
Hi Luis.
Ok. There are 3 types of dashes.
dash- this is short, and used to combine words into adjectives (blue-eyed girl.)
en dash- twice as long as regular dash, used to take the place of ‘to’ as in from 1999 to 2001, or from 1999–2001.
em dash- three times as long as regular dash, used like parentheses () or colon:, usually used to emphasize a point.
Does that help?
Adam
i like that it is really helping us thank you.

Hi, Adam ..
I wrote “just enough” at the end quiz.. Why is it not possible ???
There are definitely too many criminals in the city and certainly just enough police officer to catch them.. Is it wrong from the grammer side or for grammer “just enough” is ok, but in the logical way do you think that it is wrong , because if there are too many criminals, there will be not enough police officers, but i think it is ok to say -just enough.. Can you explain to me, please?
And i have other question, handsome teacher..
At the end
In the end
On the end
I see these three expressions a lot..
What is difference between these phrases ?
Which one in which case can we use ?

About Q3, a little too sweet?

Hey, guys, why don’t you hire a US speaker on your staff – your Canadian English is a combination of British English and French (except for Alex, maybe) – most US speakers don’t sound this way at all … Their intonation patterns are completely different too …

Hello Adam , how are you?. Could you help me , please? I am trying to pronounce like a native speaker and the problem is that when you say “a little bit better” for me, a Spanish student it sounds like “a lírelbit bérer”, If you say a “lot of love” for me it sounds “alórof lof”, and If you say ” not enough” it sounds like ” nórinof”. The point is that your T sound in this examples, and also when other native speakers talk about something, for me sound like the R sound. May I pronounced the R sound? Thank you very much!!!!!!

But it would be great if Adam record more videos, it seems recently Adam upload not enough video on Engvid.com. Thanks anyway Adam.

As for question #1, I would’ve chosen put on a jacket, but if you think about it, if the person says that it’s too hot outside, that leads you to the conclusion that that person is outside (otherwise how could they be certain it’s too hot outside?). So taking that into account, and because the person is already outside (supposedly), then I went for put on [some] sunscreen. Got that one wrong :/

7 / 10 It’s not good enough for me.

Hi. I have a question.
Could I put “to-V” after “too much/too many N”?
Like:
I have too many books to read.
I gain too much weight to be a model.
Is that unnatural or not grammatically correct?
StarChan
Actually, this question came up in my mind when my brother asked me his English exercise: Fill in the gap: “By the end of the holiday, we had spent too much money ___ souvenirs for our friends and relatives at home.” A.affording B.having afforded C.to afford D.to be afforded.
I am confused between A-structure “spend N (on) V-ing” and C-structure too … to.
StarChan
Yes, that is correct!

Excellent lesson thanks teacher…. It was enough for now
From Teacher Adam .. never is enough lessons, we need more :)
Greetings
thank you u lesson is so good
Thank you for the lesson. Have a good day.
As for number 6, shouldn’t the answer be:
I don’t know if Shane has *not enough* money to get in. I’ll go see if he’s at the entrance.
Hi Fariz,
Actually, Powerdork answered it pretty well. The ‘don’t know’ in the sentence suggests the negative already. So if I don’t know if he has enough, suggests that I think he does not have enough, the not coming earlier.
Does that help?
hello Adam Iam a big fan of yours !
all binift us thanks alot
could u make alesson about TRANSCRIPTION pls
I have requested it many times!!
I’ll go see if he’s at the entrance.
It seems to me that “to” is missing before the verb “see”.
Am I wrong?
I think what are you trying to say is you don’t know if Shane has enough money to get in or Shane is just saying he/she has not enough money to get in and he really have more than enough or enough. Am i correct?
Actually, I am just practicing my English here. Lol.
Sir, feel free to correct my grammar.
thanks a lot adam ,very good way of teaching,u were looking enough energetic.Have a good day and God bless u all.

Thanks Adam , its first time that I got enough correct answers.
otherwise , you always conduct a tough Quiz :)
Thanks anyhow :)
teacher adam thank’s for lesson.but i’ve a question
why you must say too many criminals not too much criminals even criminals noun is countable.
Abouhoma, we have to use “to many” BECAUSE noun is countable.
“Many” is used with countable nouns (many people, many bulidings, many crimminals). “Much” is used with uncountable (too much water, too much money).
Hi Abouhoma,
As Kamila mentioned, we use ‘many’ with countables, ‘much’ with uncountables.
Hope that helps.
thank you teacher I like your lessons.
Wow , new information for me about ” too much” !!

it was really intresting thank’s a lot
Q7. Why isn’t the answer “not enough?” I think this seems more suitable for the question. Does anybody can explain this? I will appreciate it.
Because “not enough” would be a acceptable answer, but anyone thinks has “too much happy” in live(anyone complains that).
Hi Endeavor,
The key is in the word ‘difficult.’ Too much happiness is a complaint, right? Not many people would make this complaint. It would be difficult to do so. It would be easy to say “I don’t have enough happiness in my life.”
Does that help?
Thanks thousands. I misunderstood the sentence. At the second try I got it all. Happy holidays.
Thank you very much! It was very nice.
Thanks al lot! I am improving site the lessons
Thank you Margaret. I miss understood the sentence. Thanks, now It makes sense.
Thank a lot for this lesson. I am still having some difficulty understanding these technical words but I will practicing as much as I can.
Thanks sir very informative.
7. It would be very difficult for anyone to complain that they have not enough happiness in life.
I reckon my answer’s apt enough too.
Is that good English?
Hi Bonhoff,
Actually people make this complaint all the time. :)
The key is in the word ‘difficult.’ Too much happiness is a complaint, right? Not many people would make this complaint. It would be difficult to do so. It would be easy to say “I don’t have enough happiness in my life.”
Does that help?
Of course it does.
In the Q3 I think that it is a little contradictory, isn’t it?
I think that, becouse you are sayin “a little too much”
In my lenguage there’re some contradictory phrases that people says just for customary(habit), is that the case?
Could anyone explain me that please
Thanks
Hi Pedrico,
If I understand your question correctly, you are worried that the word ‘little’ contradicts “too much.” In fact, the word ‘little’ is an adverb that suggests the level of the complaint, not the level of the sweetness.
Does that help?
Yes that helped me. Thanks for the explanation Adam!!
Hi Adam,
Nice lesson but i am still confused to use too much on question-7. I think ans could be “not enough”.
Hi Vishnu,
The key is in the word ‘difficult.’ Too much happiness is a complaint, right? Not many people would make this complaint. It would be difficult to do so. It would be easy to say “I don’t have enough happiness in my life.”
Does that help?
Dear all. Your quiz platform doesn’t run on my laptop equipped by Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 9. Clicking Next Question button the next quiz doesn’t appear. Which plug-in, I suppose, I need for solving my problem? Thank you very much.

I got 9 correct out of 10. What a horrible error!
In the question number seven:
too happiness instead of too much happiness
TOO + ADJECTIVE/ADVERB
TOO MUCH + NOUN
Your explanation is very, very good I think you are a great teacher and a great person too.I would like to have more lessons from you ,Thank You. All the best, Roni
thanks for this lesson see u l8ter !!
gr8 lesson Adam thank ,,,
just some questions
can I use ^too much^ before an adjective or just too
e.g. The house would be too much expensive .
e.g. The houes would be too expensive .
which one is proper , or both of them are correct
also this : in the sense
thank you ,, you are too kind
does too in the sentence showed in negative way ??
I found that “much” and “too” are switched when you put them before an adjective. But in this case, it isn’t necessary to use “much”, so you can simply drop it. And the person also said that “I’m afraid I can’t give the grammatical reasoning behind it, but it is fairly common to see “much too” before an adjective.”
So, considering your examples:
“The house would be much too expensive.”
“The house would be too expensive.”
immmm,,, I see
Hi Hisham,
Morfik gives an excellent answer. You can say ‘much too expensive,’ where much is an intensity adverb that says something about the level of the complaint, not the price. If it’s too expensive, you already can’t afford it. But if it’s much too expensive, you won’t even consider borrowing.
Does that help?
yep,it help thanks million Adam .
As for the second part, great question.
“You are much too kind”– This is technically negative, but in a way to be humble. It means you are more kind than necessary, but I appreciate it.
i am very happy thanks you
It was fine:)
Dear Adam,
I frequently see dashes as part of texts, and I am not sure, but I think that some of them are using to separate main ideas of secondary ones, and others are being used to build adjectives. Could you please help me clarify when and how I should use dashes in my sentences?
Regards and thanks in advance,
Luis
Hi Luis.
Does that help?
i like that it is really helping us thank you.
thx a lot dear teacher
Thank you so much. That’s good enough for me.

Адам, почему Вы продолжаете беседу в то время как я не понимаю?
Adam, why do you keep talking while I do not understand?
P.S. “I have more then enough money” – that is not bad.
Что значит ваш тест!? Собираетесь Вы издеваться надо мной и дальше?
What is your quiz!? Intend you scoff over me further?
Почему Вы принимаете решение в вопросах, на которые я не хочу давать ответ?
Why do you decide matters that I do not want to give an answer?
Fuck off, asshole, and learn some English before you post … I’m sure this Adam dude doesn’t give two shits about your stupid comments ..

very good and difficult lesson
Thank you very much Adam. I like it and I enjoyed it.
it’s the best way to learn basic english <3 <3
That make me confuese.
because I don’t understand a little or too?
Is it natural way? or, am I wrong?
Hey, guys, why don’t you hire a US speaker on your staff – your Canadian English is a combination of British English and French (except for Alex, maybe) – most US speakers don’t sound this way at all … Their intonation patterns are completely different too …
thankkkkk youuuuuu so muchhhhh
Hi, Adam! First of all, thanks a lot for interesting and useful lessons.

Hi Adams,
I want to thank you
You are the best !
Adam, thank you so much for explaining. I like your lessons.
7/10! Terrible! Adam’s lesson is higher level than Emma’s. I need to go over every lesson and study hardly.
Hi. I have a question.
Could I put “to-V” after “too much/too many N”?
Like:
I have too many books to read.
I gain too much weight to be a model.
Is that unnatural or not grammatically correct?
Actually, this question came up in my mind when my brother asked me his English exercise: Fill in the gap: “By the end of the holiday, we had spent too much money ___ souvenirs for our friends and relatives at home.” A.affording B.having afforded C.to afford D.to be afforded.
I am confused between A-structure “spend N (on) V-ing” and C-structure too … to.
Yes, that is correct!
Great lesson! Adam can water down English subjects very good! Thank you!!!
