English Speaking – Saying Hello and Goodbye

James, What about “YO”? I hear a lot of people on tv say it: yo, brother… yo, man. and like that. Is it ok english?

The word (not a true word ) is down grading and reckless.
Widely seen in Street people movies of America, acting as less educated people.
Using this as a greeting is unquestionably not going to win any merit with people, indeed it will down grade any status you may have.

Yo Jonas, we do use ‘yo’ in a very informal way with friends and also with people who we don’t know (we don’t know their names and we want their attention). Hope that helped clarify.

What’s the respond for “what’s up”, and “how are you doing” ? thank you

Hi Sebastian,

The proper response to “what’s up” is to tell the person one of two things:

1. If they are with you at the time and looking around the area TELL THEM WHAT YOU’RE DOING. They are probably thinking something interesting is going on and want you to inform them. (Note: They may also be asking if there is a problem — listen to the tone)

2. If they are looking at you they want to know how you are. SO TELL THEM… lol!

The proper response to “How are you doing?” is

Formal:

“I’m well, thank you, and yourself?”

Informal:

“I’m good, and you?”

At my work is a lady wich she is very-very correct or very-very formal in our work relations. Some times ,this very-very correct relations, it scares me.
Any way, at the end of the day before she leaves she will say:
“I’m going home, I’LL SEE YOU TOMORROW , or, on Friday for weekend,
“Bye, I”LL SEE YOU MONDAY….

My response to her was and allways is “THANK YOU” and now is more easy for me to say or to answer with just “THANK YOU” to everybody which ,at the end of the day, will say to me, bye Gimmi or see you tommorrow Gimmi.

I do not know how to answer the greetings “I’ll see you tomorrow” in a very formal way.

The quick answer: “request” (as a verb) is transitive, “ask” is intransitive. How it works:

– Ask for a new chair.
– Request a new chair.

You can also ask [someone] questions, but you’d request answers. (People don’t really use “request” with questions and answers, though.)
