method to my madness
! The poet and playwright William Shakespeare
has had a big influence on the English language. Many of he words and expressions that he invented are still in use today, and we often don’t realize it. In this lesson, I will introduce you to some of the most common expressions which first appeared in print hundreds of years ago and are still used today. So come on. Break the ice
, and watch the lesson!

Thank you Gill!
I didn’t know all these expressions came from Shakespeare’s work until now. In fact, they’re very common nowadays.
You made a good point when noticing that he was the first one to put these phrases in black & white (He didn’t coin them). Probably they had been in use long before.
Absorbing lesson Gill, it was a nice brush on literature.
Regards
Have a marvelous weekend!
Thanks a lot Gill. The phrases are very useful and very similar to the Spanish ones. Your pronunciation and the way you teach are really good and clear.
Thanks again
Thank you very much
Thank you! :)
I really didn’t notice all those expressions are originated from William Shakespeare!
Thank you for the clear-cut lecture.
Thank you very much
What a brilliant lesson! Why didn’t you debut on EngVid whith that instead of the grammar one? Anyaway congratulations and thanks!
Thank you Gill! I want to see more videos with your lessons.
I like the expression ‘in a pickle’, ‘it’s Greek to me’ and ‘star-crossed.’ I imaged ‘star-crossed’ meant ‘happy’ but it meant ‘unhappy.’ Really interesting lesson! Thank you, Gill :)

Hello! I don’t underststand what you didn’t like in my previous comment. Yes, I made mistakes but I enjoyed your lesson. The mistakes mayby because of my tidness. I liked your lesson very much but if my short comment, don’t suit, I’ll will not write anything, though I like your presentation very much. Thanksba lot!
Thanks Gill for this cultural and useful lesson
In Portuguese we have some expressions that are literally the same, I think they are translated from English to Portuguese a long time ago and now is a common use expression in both language and, maybe, in much more languages.
Globalization has been happening since much time ago.
I can list some retranslated:
– Breaking the ice
– This is greek to me
– This house saw better days
A few of those expressions are using in turkish as well. It’s good to know where it comes from. It deserves respect
Thanks for this interesting lesson again.
I can’t wait to see your next lesson
You’re right :)
Hi Gill,
I like your lessons, in particular the topics you choose.
This one about Shakespeare’s expressions was very interesting to follow. Great personalities deserve to be always remembered and taken as good examples.
To be or not to be!) Very interesting phrases I need to use some of them… Thanks

Thank you Gill Your lesson is very useful .
wow, i didn’t know before that wear my heart on my sleeve created by William. It’s so good knowing the meaning of it phrase. Thank you for this learnings, now I’ve got another light insight
I’ve appreciated, I’ve enjoyed your new lesson in a full way! It seems you are a very nice person too…. I know, two short videos are not enough to judge a person, but your particular way to represent things and situation seems to be from some good English way to be, rich of politeness, respectful but that goes right to the claimed result: in this case to teach same good B.E. enjoying yourself doing it.
Nice when you blushed… Speaking about the meaning of “the heart on your sleeve” :-)… I think you’ll achieve a big success in engvid and in YouTube, almost like our beloved Jade had. I think so because you (and her) tech English not like something impersonal but dressing it with some humanity…. bye
Thanks Gill
I find this video very interesting and useful for everybody. Thank you !

Hi Teacher Gill thank you very much for teaching me about shakespare special words even it is very hard to catch it at once I will study it gradully .thanks a lot.
how can i get the other lessonses quiz
Hi Gill, thank you very much for such an interesting lesson. I was quite suprised when I found out that some of these expressions are in use in my language (Polish) too, like ‘there’s a method in my madness’, ‘break the ice’, ‘catch a cold’, ‘heart of gold’, ‘hot-blooded’ or ‘full circle’ in slightly Polish version of ‘closed circle’ in meaning something between Shakespear’s ‘full circle’ and English ‘catch 22’. Once again – thanks.
It’s very interesting,thanks.
Thanks a lot, Gill
Gill, thank you very much for this lesson! It’s very interesting to me!!!
Both thumbs up for you, Gill. I found the lecture very interesting. Thanks!
Hi everyone — thank you all for your kind comments about my lesson. Shakespeare is a favourite subject of mine, so I’m glad you liked it :-) Katrin, to answer your question, I may have spoken on the radio once or twice, but only as a guest, not as a regular presenter. Maybe one day … !!!
Hi, Gill !`m ver anxious to see you again, this lessos was one of the best i`ve ever seen Thanks a lot.
Thanks Gill, I really enjoy your classes!
Gil congratulations and welcome again to Engvid.com again you sound sweet. Listen to you speaking in fact is very ….? Tranquilizing?! Maybe that’s the word.
About Shakespeare, yes of course he was and still is the most recognizable writer ever and the sentences you choose are very unique ” that’s method in my madness” …. But the one, the universal, the sentence that everybody never doubted, about who had written, that one, is of course “to be or not…..”
“There’s method in my madness”
How come William Shakespeare lived in the __16th and 17th_____ centuries.
when he was born in 1564 and died in 1616. ??
It’s a bit confusing, isn’t it?
The first century was the years 0-99; the second century was 100-199; the third century was 200-299…etc. So the century’s number is always one ahead of the number the years start with.
Thanks for removing my confusion. :)
XX century between 1900 / 1999
XXI century between 2000 / 2099
Now we are living in the XXI century 2015, cheers
It’s been very interesting to note the expression used by The bard of the English language. Thanks a lot.
Very useful!Thanks!
Thank you, Gill :)
10/10 thanks Gill.
Well done Gill. A very pleasant, interesting lesson
May Allah reward you :)
Thank you.

Hi Gill.
I enjoyed a lot this lesson! I like english peotry.
I noticed we had a lot common idioms beetwin english and french. To break the ice or to have a heart of gold for example. I suscribe to your lessons on Youtube. Have a nice evening.
Sorry for the mistakes, I had a lot of problems with my tablet. I just wanted to say to you that I suscribed to your channel on Youtube. Many thanks, have a nice evening.
Great lesson Gill. I am a regular user of your videos as a resource for all my ESL classes from the A1 level (Ronnie is an expert on those) to the C1. However I am facing the prospect of imparting a C2, and have been looking for materials to use with not too much success, I must say. Adding some lessons like this one will help me a lot in that endeavour.
As I told my coworkers, teaching a C1 is one thing, but when you are teaching a C2, not only you are in a different ball game ……….. you are in a different stadium altogether.
It’s astomishing in France we use some of these expressions from Shakespeare !
This writer makes me think of Moliere because these men are modern.
Thank you for this interesting lesson and congratulations for your accent and diction
adore your british accent ,Best regards for you and may Allah (god)reward you .
I think it is very interesting lesson and I loved it. I’d like to see this kind of lesson more and more.
Hil Gill, I’m a student, I like studying English so much, and until now I all self-study English, sometimes I make many mistakes when I use English for speaking and writing. Can you give me your email I will send to you some sentences and when you have free time, please to help me correct them if they have mistakes. Thanks very much!

Hello, Gill, may I ask you, do you have a private classes as a tutor by Skype?
Thank you.
Thank you Jill.
What a fantastic lesson! Thank you very much indeed. I did enjoy watching it and found it very inspirational. Thank you, Gill. :)
So interesting subject
please Mrs Gill continue on especially in literature ( poems , authors , novels and plays ) I love it so much
Thank you Gill. I was afraid of this lesson but I loved it. It’s interesting that most of these expressions exist in my mother-tongue. (However, things are not all ‘Greek’ but all ‘Chinese’ to us.) I assume they have come through by Hungarian poets who had created similar expressions in Hungarian and (of course) also translated Shakespeare. It’s good listening to You, I’m looking forward to your next lessons.
iv’e learn so much about shakespeare thank you gill i will definately tell others about

Hello Gill
I have watched you video in the twinkling of an eye (The Merchant of Venice). I was thinking how difficult was the life in England in the medieval times and it made my hair stand on end(Hamlet).
Thank you for this useful phrases. I was looking for something connected with Shakespeare and I was sure it was a wild-goose chase (Romeo and Juliet) when I at one fell swoop (Macbeth) I saw this lesson. I am quite convinced that many people will laid it on with a trowel if you make a second lesson like this.
Take care!
your accent is so clear that we understand easily ..thanks my mum Gill
Thank yoou Gill, very interesting lesson .

Hi, Gill thank you so much for the lesson. it is very interesting and I love learning from you. If you don’t mind I would like to have a subject verb agreement lesson from you. I believe you will be able to make me understand more easy than any other resources.
Thank you Gill!Very interesting :)
Thank you. The lesson is awesome.I recorded all these expressions.
You got 8 correct out of 10.
thank you
If Shakespeare was born in 1564 and died in 1616 he lived in the 15th and 16th centuries and not in the 16th and 17th. Am I right or not?
The years 0-100 are the 1st century, the years 100-200 are the 2nd century and so on. So the 1500s are the 16th century, and the 1600s are the 17th century.
Loved,loved,loved this lesson,Gill. OMG!
To me, that’s what ENGVID is all about.
The most beautiful language, in the whole wide world,
and British Culture.
Congratulations,Gill. Hope you have some more free
time to prepare more lessons like this one.
And, I think not everybody agrees with Sir
Shakespeare when he says: ” Those who CAN do,
those who CAN’T teach.”
Gill, you are a living proof that that’s not
exactly correct.
Thank you, very, very much.
