Howdy, Adam!I feel very honorable for being the first student to leave a comment. Phrasal verbs are one of the most difficult topics in English in my opinion. And when we have to memorize a huge list of them it becomes even worse. However, fortunately there are good teachers like you who make the subject more pleasant, giving examples and contextualizing them! Thank you for the excellent lesson, and carry on teaching!!

Eduardo França

Thank you Eduardo. Actually, better not try to memorize them– as you say, there are too many. Better to do a lot of reading and listening and experience them in context enough that they absorb into your vocab base naturally. It takes time, but it works ;)

    Adam

Good morning, Adam! Thank you so much for the lesson.

bellatimor

Hi Adam.Thank you for this lesson

mohamed nadjib

Thank you Adam, even fun for carrying forward phrasal verbs¡¡¡¡
Or was it “on”? :-)

ireneruiz

Hi Adam! In doing the quiz I came out with carry through; it has the same meaning of carry off?

salvatore.chiariello

HI Salvatore. In some cases they can be used in a similar way, yes.

    Adam

Hi Adam,
not sure about number 7
I chose ” away”

reemabousaid

I think that “on” is the right answer cause Adam gave us explanation: “Carry on” means “fool around, be silly”. Another question is why he didn’t tell us about such meaning of this phrasal verb directly in lesson…

    ldsad

I agree with you. I made me listen again and again to the lesson to see if I missed something (wich is not a bad thing). I was happy to discover that I wasn’t the only one.

      Anne-Liesse

You’re right Idsad. I must have overlooked it. Honest mistake :)

      Adam

    Hi Reema,

If he got carried away it means he lost control of himself. Carry on means he played and didn’t listen to the teacher.
    :)

    Adam

I did the same mistake, then I remembered that he said, Carry On means, keep complaining about something and that what losers always do.

    Regards,

    AhmadMahmud

You made a mistake. Do not say “do a mistake”.

Hi Adam! Thanks for this video. I agree with Eduardo Fracan, phrasal verbs are quite dificult for me as well. But it is very important to learn all of them because they are used on daily conversations.

Sorry I made a mistake and I sent my comment before I finish writing it.

Teacher, Carry each other means, help someone?

Gil Ramirez

    Hi Gil,

It could mean literally help each other stay up (physically) or in terms of work, yes, it can be to help each other out, but more in terms of survival, that is, they couldn’t do it alone.

    Adam

Hi Adam, I have improved to much my understanding english with yours lessons…grettings from Venezuela

Interesting but difficult lesson for me. I’ll need to see it again and again before to memorise it.
Thank you.

beernaard

Hi Adam,Thank u for carrying out this lesson. You carried it off great. But you didn’t teach the means of question 6# and 7#.In question 7#,There is tip:”Carry on” means “fool around, be silly”.But i think this is a little more odd,I’m not sure for it.Can you explain it again?

Bob1975

    Hi Bob,

Yes, it seems I missed that one in the lesson. When we say the children are carrying on and won’t settle down, it means they are playing and not listening to the adults.

Carry through (#6) means to bring to a successful conclusion. I’m pretty sure I mentioned that one in the lesson.

    Hope this helps.

    Adam

I love your lessons. :-)

Arjuno

it’s so cool lesson Adam thanks..

Hy Adam
I hope you are doing well
Something has confused me about how make a question form for this answer
He is the third child of the family
Could you please tell me how could we make its questions form? Is there any wh-form?

123456mehdi

He is third child of his family.

    Muhammad Abbas

He’s the third child of his.

    fahdbensalman72

    Hi Mehdi,

I’m not completely sure what you mean, but if I meet someone with kids, I might ask “How many kids do you have?” and then “which one is he?”

I have 4 kids, and he is the third (of the family wouldn’t be necessary in this case).

    Does this help?

    Adam

8/10 thank you very match adam

soulef

Thank you for information Teacher. This lesson is very enjoyful.

Mehmet Fatihcan

Hi, Adam!! Thank you for your lesson, I think too that phrasal verbs are difficult!!
I was trying to make phrases with all this “carry ph verbs”, and it carried me to a doubt. Can I use them separate into a phrase?? For example, Can I said: “Carry the tradition on”…
Thank you very much!!!

ManuBustar

    Hi ManuBustar,

Yes, many of these phrasals can be split up. In the example you gave we can also say carry on the tradition. In some case you can’t split phrasals, in some you can, and in some you must. The best thing to do is read a lot and you will see them used and get a “sense” for which is the correct way.

    Hope this helps.

    Adam

thank you so much

Vivimi

Thank you for that great lesson. I got 7 out of 10. I still have to make progress about phrasal verbs. It’s really hard for me. Best regards and thanks a lot for your help. Marie-Claude

Vladkabatkovich

Hello Adam ,
Thank you for this not so easy but so useful lesson .
Phrasal verbs are the things that I wonder if I can deal correctly with one day .
Wouldn’t there be tips to decipher out what meaning a phrasal verb has rather than learn them by heart ?
See you

tsamp

I wish I could answer yes, Tsamp, but that’s the problem with phrasals– some have more than one meaning. As with any new vocab, though, try to guess the meaning from context first, then if you can’t guess, look up the word online or in a dictionary.

    Adam

nice lesson,Sir is there any website through which we can talk to the english

quddus khan

    Hi Quddus,

If you type “English speaking online” you will find many such sites. I personally don’t know which are the good ones, but you can try a few out and see for yourself. You will likely speak to other English students, but it’s better than not practicing at all. You can also try to contact other people here on the forum.

    Adam

Thank You :) It was great!

Timur Sibatov

Thank you for your lesson. That was helpful for me.

Khader99

it’s my first time to learn your lesson, thanks a lot.

Guohua

Hi
Hope you are doing well
I would be glad if you could tell me what is the exact meaning of this sentence in English the sentence is ” was it a bad day or was it a bad five minutes that you milked all day ”
I exactly wanna know the meaning in what case do people use such this sentence and why for? Thanks in advance
I will impatiently be waitting for your answer

123456mehdi

:) This is a difficult one because you might not be familiar with the slang phrase “to milk something”.

To milk something means to get the most out of it that you can. (think of milking a cow– you pull on the udder until you get every last drop of milk out of the cow).

If somebody had a bad experience, but then milked it for the rest of the day just so he could have a reason to complain, then he is milking those bad 5 minutes to get the most sympathy from others that he can.

    Does this help?

    Adam

Nice lesson Adam, I’m really carrying your lessons forward my future. Just diving in!

It’s very very complicated for me

Tarek7777

Hi Adam thanks for your lessons. Anyway I still have doubts regarding the usage of TO CARRY THROUGH/TO CARRY OUT/TO CARRY OFF? it seems to me they have a very similar meaning: to complete, to perform …. aplay, a task, a project… can you help me to better distinguish them? thanks

ANGIE

    Hi Angie,

    Yes they are similar.

Carry through means take from start to finish successfully.
    Carry out means, basically, do
carry off means to complete well (usually something that is difficult or that others did not think you would be able to complete well)

    Does this help?

    Adam

Teacher Adam,
What is the difference between these clauses and when we use them in conversation:
The dog that barks is mine.
The dog barking is mine.

fahdbensalman72

    Hi Fahdbensalman,

The dog that barks is mine.– adjective clause identifying the dog that you claim as yours.

The dog barking is mine.– technically, this probably should be “the barking dog is mine” in which case it would be a participle adjective (which is a reduced adjective clause).

We use both of these structures quite often. I will be giving a lesson on this fairly soon.

    Does this help?

    Adam

      Thank you very much, Adam
Don’t forget to mention my name on the blackboard!
      I’m kidding!

      fahdbensalman72

your lessons r very usefull. i used to have trouble with these phrasal verbs. now its much better

thuyvan080599

Dear Lisa,
a lot of things have happened since you went to London.
We bought a new car.
My brother found a new job.
My parents went on holiday “last week”.
My sister learned/has learned how to ride a bike.(this can be both because she might still be learning as it takes time)
Our Pussy cat took part in a cat show.
It was two days ago.
She won a prize.
I have already written two letters to you.
But I haven’t heard from you yet. Write to me
soon.
Best wishes,
Olga.
Technically, all the “events” should be simple past because they are randomly listed as happening in that time period (since you left until today). The letters show two actions in that period, so they are perfect tenses since they happened over two unknown times, and still waiting to hear from you, so the action continues.

KATRIN777

Adam, that’s your answer to my question that was put forward under previous video. Could you explain me, what would it mean if I said:”We HAVE bought a new car”?(Would it mean that we could sell it already? Or would it mean that we have no car yet?)
    Thank you.

    KATRIN777

Sorry it’s still difficult to understand, when so many past tenses, how to make it right.

      KATRIN777

        Hi Katrin,

Because you are listing events within a “known” time period, there is nothing indefinite about them, meaning you know more or less when they happened. If you say we’ve bought a new car, it doesn’t mean it’s gone, but maybe hasn’t been delivered yet. You could use the perfect for this list but you just don’t need to, so why add words?

In the next couple of weeks I’ll be posting a lesson on the present perfect on my new YouTube channel (write to top). Hopefully that will explain some of this stuff.

        Let me know :)

        Adam

          That’ll be great!
          Thank you.

          KATRIN777

HI ADAM!!…THANK YOU .I HAVE NO WORDS TO TELL YOU HOW GREATFUL I AM FOR ALL THE VIDEOS, ALL ARE VERY INTERESTING..THANKS A MILLION…GOD BLESS YOU.

maids

    Thank you Maids :)

    Adam

Thank you teacher Adam ,there’s a question about “Carry through “in the Quiz and that phrasal V. was not mentioned in that video :D , i like the Quiz it’s full of expressions and Vocabs , have a good one :D

Aya Ayo

You are right, Aya. Where is the explanation about “carry through”?

    Júlio César L Sousa

    Important notice aya

    Mohamed Sedky

    Hi Aya,

It seems I missed a couple of these in the video.

Carry though means take from start to finish and complete successfully.

Carry on means to play around and not settle down.

    Sorry for the oversight.

    Hope this helps :)

    Adam

Dear teacher Adam: First of all, thank you very much, I’m so glad I found you, I did not know how to use phrasal carry correctly, I know I need a lot of practice on this one, I will do it no matter what, until I get it.

Lorenalagos

Excellent teacher as ever! Carry on this way…!
Thank you so much…!!!

lucascotti

Thanks, Adam.
By the way, I’d like to ask
‘in-class performance’ or ‘class performance’ is correct?

Sophie

Sorry, I get one more question.
‘Master’ and ‘Masters’ what is the difference?
Under what conditions should I use ‘Master’ and ‘Masters’?
    Thanks.

    Sophie

    Hi Sophie,

It depends what you’re referring to. The whole class? class performance. A student’s performance in-class vs. online or on-the-job?
    not sure.

As for Master, are you referring to a person or a degree? Masters is the plural of master, but I have a feeling that’s not what you’re asking :)

    I have a master’s degree in English.
I completed a Master of English degree.

    Does this help?

    Adam

      Thanks.
However I’d like to ask one more question.
‘As being a (position e.g. manager)’ and ‘as a (position)’
What is the difference between them?

      Sophie

hmmm… I’d need a bit more of this sentence. It seems it should be ” as a manager, …”. Not sure about the ‘being’ part.

class performance means how the entire class performed (academically) as opposed to individuals.

        Adam

Then ‘class performance’ usually refers to the attitudes of students or academic performance?

      Sophie

thanks for your lesson. May I learn one more time to get more.

Hi Everyone. Thank you for all the comments. :)

It seems I missed a couple of explanations in the video, so here they are:

Carry though means take from start to finish and complete successfully.

Carry on means to play around and not settle down.

Sorry about that.

Adam

Thanks Adam for your answer!Great …Perfect.

ANGIE

Thanks

6/10 , :(( i am a little bit confused about ” carry throught ” , Could you explain it , please??

thiennguyen1994

    Hi Thiennguyen,

Carry through means take to completion. If I started a project, then I should carry it through to the end, not leave it unfinished.

    Does this help?

    Adam

thank you . i got it

      thiennguyen1994

Hi, Adam. Thanks for the great lessons. I would suggest that would be good you mention synonyms of the phrasal verbs. That would help people that don’t memorize well by telling a situation, like me. :) Also I suggest you have a small explanation written, after the quiz. That would help memorize better.

Rarison

I’ll keep that in mind Rarison. Thanks :)

    Adam

Phrasal verbs is the most difficult and confusing topic I´ve seen. I can´t see the differences among them. Any advise to improve in this topic

Hello Adam, thank you for your clear lesson about this eternal problem , the phrasal verbs!! but i don’t understand two of the answers:
6: you write that “carry through “means to bring to a successfull conclusion but you didn’t mention it in your lesson ; you said that “carry off” meant to manage something succesfully so are the 2 phrasal verbs synonyms?
7: you write “carry on” means to fool around , to be silly ?? in your lesson it was mentionned ” to continue , to go on” ??
Thanks for your answer

isabelle

To recap, I copied the explanations:
“Carry around” means “have” or “keep”, though it does not need to be a physical thing.
“Carry back” means “remind of the past, be nostalgic”.
“Carry forward” means “move to a future time/situation”.
“Carry off” means “do successfully”.
“Carry on” means “continue”.
“Carry on” means “fool around, be silly”.
“Carry over” means “continue at another time or place”.
“Carry through” means “bring to a successful conclusion”.
“to carry out” means “to do”
“To get carried away” means “to lose self-control”.
