I have a doubt on the section ‘spelling’. Would like to know, what is the criteria to look for the consonants; you did for some in the beginning, and for some, in the end; e.g. cold: why did we not look at the first 3 letters COL…then it is CVC which warrants addition of one more D. Thank you advance for your response.

Hi Girijan,

Let me answer this one for one. There is actually no fit-for-all rule, but in case of “COLD”, the adjective ends in two consonants (LD); in that case we do not double the last consonant.

Actually, something very similar can be seen when forming the past tense of regular verbs (stoPPed, talked, walked, siPPed, fiTTed (BrEn), tiPPed, etc.). That is, we do not double the last consonant (K) in talked and walked, because it is preceded by another consonant.

One of the main reason, I think, why we double e.g. the “G” in “bigger” is because otherwise we would have to read “biger” as “bye-ger” and “hoter” as “h-oh-ter”(“OH” as is “O”).

In the test, question Number 5 is about: Comparing People (part of the rule).
But in the options the correct answer is :

❀But Taking in consideration your explanation about the lesson Comparative adjective :

– Use the word MORE, when we have longer words that are more than one syllable.
-When the adjective ends in Y.these are some two syllables adjectives that we can use ER on, adding ER is necessary change the Y to an i.
– using exception of rule where sometimes I can have a choice.

✓ Now Funnier is from Funny.

In my opinion If the question is about comparing people, the correct answer could be like this :

Avery is more funnier than Patrick.
