To show one’s true colours means to show how one is really like. Usually it’s used when someone lies about what type of person they are until a situation brings out their true personality.

Pfalba used the idiom correctly, but maybe this isn’t the best example of when to use it. Unless, like Evaldo, he thought I was too serious before, but now understands I’m not too serious ;)

could you explain to me the difference between include,contain,involve,and consist?

Hi Super Mario,

Include — to make in a part of something (e.g. a group)
Contain — to have within.
Involve — to make part of (an action, discussion, etc)
Consist — be made up of (parts… so a whole consists of its parts)

These can all be used as synonyms depending on their function in the sentence. Of course, different contexts will require the use of one word over another. The best thing to do is check a dictionary and make sure thst the meaning you intend is conveyed by the best word.

Some good answers here. I will add that to see things in black and white is not only practical, but it is much simpler (some people might say more realistic). Something is either A or it is B, not somewhere between (i.e., there is no grey). Like Evaldo said, more straightforward.

Hi Gurinder,

‘Of course’ is called an interjection–it is an expression one says as a lead-up to something or as a response to something… it cannot be used by itself and is not really a part of the sentence structure itself. ‘obvious’ is an adjective and can be used in conjunction with a noun.

#1 is ok. #2 means what do you cut with a saw (a tool).

In #2, if you mean saw as past tense of see then it doesn’t work.

‘rather than’ is normally used when someone is talking about his/her preference. when you prefer something over the other, you use this expression.
for example – i prefer going to school by bus ‘rather than’ walking all the way.

No, “collar” is right! It refers to the kind of clothes workers wear. “Blue collar” = heavy-duty clothes that someone in the trades or a factory might wear, “white collar” = dress shirts, “pink collar” = jobs traditionally delegated to women, e. g. secretary.

But I’d like to know your opinion, about this

8/9! Good! I was a blue-collar working in the ship when I graduated from university. End one year sailing time, I became a white-collar in the office. My company was set when I finished my white-collar work.

Here’s an imaginary colorful story covering the idioms taught by Adam in this session :-)

Adam is a studious-looking guy living in Canada.
In his teens, he was truly innocent to understand the shades of grey and always used to see things in black and white.
Now he is very optimistic and his personality is such that he looks at life through rose-tinted glasses.

One day he met the girl of his dreams; what else her name could be other than Eve!! :-)
Adam was tickled pink to see Eve and proposed her for marriage.
Eve gave him green light and both of them got engaged. They had two-month courtship before marrying and in this duration their family members saw both of them going out everyday and painting the town red.

Eve was preparing for TOEFL exam and Adam helped her in grasping things faster and finally she came out in flying colors in her examination.
Also, Eve proved lucky to Adam as he got promoted and his wish of becoming a white-collared from blue-collared worker came true.

They both lived happily ever after.
