shoot the breeze
, talk a mile a minute
, spill the beans
, and more. I’ll explain the meaning of these commonly used idioms and also teach you when NOT to use them! Knowing idioms always takes your communication skills to a higher level. Remember, idioms are useful for IELTS, TOEFL, and TOEIC test-takers, too.

Thanks a lot! It’s an useful lesson indeed. I scored 10 out of 10. By the way, one of the idioms you explained about (to speak the same language) is also used in my native language.
Best regards
We also use this idiom in Portuguese!
That’s interesting and nice at the same time. So do we in Italy ;-) We all speak the same language!
Also we use to say: “we’re in tune” like a radio. In Italian: “Siamo sintonizzati”
100 % tks a log
Hi Rececca a small reqest could you please write about your last example about ideoms.
I tried to replay again and again but you talked a mile a minute so i could not understand the last example.
you can take from the quiz.
“My girlfriends talked me out of staying at home crying over my old boyfriend and they talked me into going out with them to the party”
In this case “girlfriends” refers to “female friends”.
thanks so much !

Great video. Thanks for the very useful content.
Thanx it’s very useful :)
Thanks Rebecca. I have a new questions. Would you like to explain to us when is good to use the question: “Wat’s up?” and what is exact the meaning for it. If someone is using it which are the best possible answers? Thank you very much for answering to us. Cata
What’s up?
This means the same as:
What’s happening?
What’s new?
What’s going on?
It can also mean:
What’s wrong?
The answers depend on the situation, and range from saying “Nothing special” to actually describing what’s going on.
All the best to you.
Thanks Rebecca, I like your teaching.
thnx so much . you are excellent forever
i like it, it’s very useful for me about english idioms one of my problem in learning english
Yes, you are not alone. Everyone finds idioms challenging, but you can make progress one idiom at a time! My best to you.
Thank you for this lesson. :)
thanks. this is a beautiful and exciting lesson
i got an a in this test Miss : Rebecca i just don’t now how can i thank you i’m really thankful those were an magnificent idioms , i hope you make some lesson for conversational skills please , sending big Hi from Egyptian Nile to you ♥ ;)
I am so glad to hear you found the lesson helpful. My best wishes to you in Egypt.
thanks for this lesson.
Hi Rebecca,
I’m wondering if you could make a video to explain me this doubt, please:
What is the right way:
March THE 4th?
Or
March 4h?
Thank you in advance!
Best wishes,
Simara Moreira
usually we just say March 4th. Sometimes we use March the 4th, if we are trying to emphasize the date. The first way is always correct, so best to use that. All the best to you.
I could perfectly understand what these 6 idioms mean, but I’d like to know what “he works on commission” mean.
It means as much as he can sale shoes, therefore he could get more money beyond of his salary.
Thanks!
It is easy to understand.
When you sell goods in a small shop (in retail trade) or in a warehouse (in wholesale trade) in comission, you will get a certain percentage after “the price of a sold good” or your full sale/selling.
you can see here an example:
A customer is looking for a shirt with green colour in your shop.
You have more green shirts in his size and he likes all of them.
There are 3 products that suit to your customer and now he must decide which one he should buy.
However, He wants to buy the cheapest.
It is wrong for you because you will get less “commission” after it. So, you try to “talk him out of buying it” and “talk him into buying the most expensive one”.
the price of first product is “400$”,
the price of second product is “500$”,
the price of third product is 600$.
-Question?
Which (one) will you force him to buy it? or to persuade him to buy it? The third one!
-Why?
There are 2 chances in getting “commission” :
1. If you only get percentage after your sale:
for example: 6%
You get 6 per cent commission after your selling.
you will get 600$*0.06=36$ after your selling only this one product!
It is higher than the others.
2. If you get not only percentage but a basic salary too, then you will get even a bonus above your salary.
we say:
you got bonus above your salary.
Your salary is 2000$ per month.
You sold products in 1000$ value.
Your bonus will be : 1000$*0.06 = 60$.
The full money you will get after your sale: 2060$.
Of course:
You will offer the third one to your customer.
So, you are motivated to sell the customers more and more products because you will get more and more money.
I hope I wrote good and it is understandable.
Wow, it was very kind of you to offer such a detailed explanation to the question posed by sunshine above. Thank you and my best wishes to each of you!
Thanks
100 Thank you for your good lesson
Thanks a lot
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
coud you let me know if “speak the same language” likes “hit it off”???
Thanks so much!
They’re very similar! “Hit it off” is less about agreeing with each other and more about just getting along.
Thanks, engvid moderator!
thanks, i can use idiom while talking now

Hi Rebecca. I got 10 out of 10 and these are very good idioms. Thank you for your help. Good blessed you.
Unmi
I know that ” SHOOT THe breeze ” is to shoot with no result , with no target ,, Which one is correct !!!
“To shoot the breeze” has nothing to do with guns, or shooting or anything like that. It means to talk casually and unhurriedly about light topics, like when you are sitting out on a porch on a Saturday in summer, with a cool glass of lemonade and a friend drops by…
Hope this helps you. MY best wishes to you.
Hi rebecca,
I have tryied to download all your video lesson (101 qty), but no be success
please send me all of its to my mail, if possible
Tanks
Thanks!
Thank you Rebecca about these wonderful idioms…I hope more.

:)
thank you very much ,it is very useful lesson for me ,something new
Thanks Rebecca you’re a great teacher :)
Good lesson, I need more of this kind of lesson, because I am in USA now, so i need them a lot.
It’s incredible! I’m done! Thank you!
Rebecca, you are really good on this matter and I like the sound of your voice too!
Thanks.
Thanks! All the best to you!
I did the quiz perfectly. why do we have to use: talk me into/out instead of: talk to me into/out?
thanks
To talk someone into something means to convince them to do something.
To talk someone out of something means to convince them not to do something.
This is the way the idiom is phrased. When we say I talked to him about something, it is the regular use of the word talk, not the idiomatic use. My best to you.
Thank you Rebecca. I have learned much from your lessons. Could you explain use of the word “awesome”.
The word “awesome” is often used as slang today to mean great, terrific, amazing, unbelievable, etc.
All the best!
I got to 9 out of 10. not bad. Thanks Rebecca.
Thanks Rebecca..you guys are doing a brilliant job…I can see the improvement in myself…

Thanks mam!
Good for me!

“spill the beans” and “speak the same language” are also in my native language. We have got any others too but we put them another way. Those sind very valuable informations,
Thanks so much!
This’s the fist I got 10 corret quiz :)))
Thank you very much, Rebecca!
It is great and very useful lesson!
I want to join Janilza and ask you
“Teach us more idioms, please!”
In Hungary, we also use “to speak the same language” with the same meaning explained in this lesson! :-)
It is not coming to here (in this subject) but I confused about it.
So I want to ask you.
I read it more this: “what happened”. I don’t understand wha not “what’s happened”. it is not a ‘passive sentence’?
So is it not correct if I say like this:
“What was happened after Cindy had called her old friend?”
(or it work as an idiom too?)
Thanks.
Sorry, there are a few too many questions here to answer all of them. The last sentence should be:
What happened after Cindy called her old friend?
Also, “what happened?” and “what’s happened” is almost the same, so don’t worry too much about it, except the first is used to talk about anything that happened in the past and the second is used to refer to something that happened relatively recently.
All the best to you, and yes, we will continue to have more lessons on idioms.
quite interesting m njoyin
Rebecca, you’re so professional ;-) I like the way you speak. Although, sometimes too slow for me ;). Very useful and I just can’t wait to use them at work. Thanks
