Listen
or hear
? Do you know which word to use? These verbs may seem the same, but we use them differently in English. In this easy lesson, you’ll learn how to use these words correctly. I’ll also teach you some of the most common expressions we use with listen
and hear
so that you get real-life examples of these words in English. After you watch, take the quiz to make sure you know the difference between listening
and hearing
.

1st One. Yay
You were really lucky Troller! It’s not that easy to be the first one here.
But how about your score? Was it good enough?
Have a great day! See you around.
. . . as for the lesson . . . interesting tips to use these two verbs correctly.
In Spanish both verbs mean the same “escuchar”; this is the source of most mistakes. That is why it is important to know how they are used by English native speakers.
I do not know how to thank you Gill; it was a superb video-lesson!
Mind if I butt in this little chat? In Russian we have two verbs (for active and passive way of listening), with the same core, so yet again it feels like one word. So that pair english words is a little really confusing %)
Thanks for the spanish side.
In portuguese we have two verbs about hearing. One is “ouvir” and the other is “Escutar”. We use both verbs to mean hear or listen… daily, we don’t differentiate themselves.
ps.: All of you feel free to correct my english cause I want learn as much as possible.

Hello Gill .
Thank you for this lesson .
May we say ” I have heard from my sister ” getting some news about her by another person ? Unless we might say ” I have heard about my sister ”
Thank you Gill
Bye
Hi tsamp — if you say “I have heard from my sister” it means your sister has contacted you directly, eg by phone, email or letter. If you receive news/information about your sister, it’s from a different source/person, and not directly from your sister herself. I hope this helps :-) All the best with your English studies! Gill

Thank you, Jill)it was very helpful and at the same time everything was easy to understand. You are a great teacher, you remind me my favourite teacher (when I was little and went to school I adored my Maths teacher, and surprisingly, you have much in common:voice, manners, tact, tempo. I listen to you and my childhood memories are again wih me, fresh and bright)I hope, it’s polite, it’s not offensive to make such a comparison. Thanks for your work and great lessons!

Hi, Gill. The second example about “hear” makes me confused. I think “I can’t hear you” is the active form, why don’t you use “listen” ?
“People hearing without listening, people talking without speaking” — the song <>, describing people just “bla bla bla” without thier hearts today.
