What a shame I got 3 out of 10. It was difficult for me, but I don’t think to give up. I’ll try it again. Anyway Rebecca thanks for the good lesson.
Thanks for your feedback. You have a great attitude and I am sure you will continue to learn and improve. All the best to you.
Hello Rebecca ,
Thank you for this lesson . Punctuation seems to me difficult as I am so used to punctuation in French and that is , not totally , but different from English . For example , I am always confused with coma’s position in a sentence . I think it would be my main source of error if writing an essay ( among many others )
I wonder how an examiner marks an essay ? Can we get a good mark with several punctuation errors but a well developed idea and powerful vocabulary ?
What is the marking scheme for the different kind of exams ?
Thank you , see you
If you check the official websites for the IELTS or TOEFL, you will find a “scoring rubric” or “band descriptors” which explain how the examiners give scores. If you know that commas give you trouble, then look up this topic in one of the many English textbooks available, and do the exercises until you master it. Welcome every opportunity to learn what you need to learn! All the best to you.
nice lesson I got 5 out of 10.
Although this is my 1st time i got 5

You explained very simple things, but most of the times students forget about them at the time of writing.
Thank you for refreshing all these ideas and giving us advice ;)
hi, im a master student from Iran.
at first i want to say thank you for teaching.
and then i wanna say i have a big problem with these words:
1) so as to
2) in case
3) in that
4) as though = as if
5) so far as
6) in order that
7) thereby
8) therein
9) thereof
10) therefore
11) thereafter
12) wherein
13) henceforth=henceforward
14) barnone
15) bar=except
16) as for
17) as per
18) as to
19) much as
20) many as / as much
21) …
What are these words and what do you calls these words in English?
Is there a complete categorization for these words?
These are really confusing for me. Help me. Thank you.
If it is possible for you, please make a video for these words.
R.S.V.P.
Some of these are expressions, others are transition words. If you look them up online or in a good English textbook, you should be able to find explanations and exercises. Instead of trying to learn everything at once, take one at a time, and master that one, till you can use it perfectly. It’s better to do that than to try to learn too many at one time and get confused. I admire your determination and am sure you will succeed. All the best!
Please if it is possible for you, make a video for these words. Thank you.
good advices for examiners but i think i should be very very advanced learner to succeed in such tests and i am on a mission for that, thank you rebecca,i like your lessons.
Hey, congrats on using the expression “I’m on a mission” from another lesson! Good for you that you have made that a part of your vocabulary. I wish you all the best, SKIKDA.

I had 8 out of ten but what are the benefits to do this kind of exams?
Most people do these exams when they have to, for immigration, certification, or university purposes. People do not usually do exams for fun! Still, they help us to know our strengths and weaknesses and how to move forward to improve. For example, writing is an excellent way to improve your English – but only if you have someone to check your work and give you feedback! All the best to you, CART.
Thank you for the lesson, you are amazing teacher
Dear Rebecca,
Superb lesson that reminds us to master the basics to pass exams.
Yours sincerely.
it was a great lesson, Thank you so much
I felt so sure but I got only 7/10!
I console myself thinking that the difference between good writers and bad writers has little to do with skills; it has to do with perseverance: bad writers quit, good writers keep going.
6 out of 10 but its a very learning.. thank you..
interessant bt difficult lesson! 5/10, according to my level, it’s good, and after the test, there are questions i could have just! thanks Rebecca for your work! :)

Thanks Rebecca…for your outstanding lesson. I don’t have any good idea on the use of semi colon (;). Could you please suggest me how I gonna improve it?
I have just recorded a lesson on how to use the mysterious semi-colon! It is such an important punctuation mark. Stay tuned for this lesson in the future. All the best!
Hi it is just second time to visit here and first to log in as a member.
I note your comments above to improve in learning expression and transition work to go to online of “Good English Textbook”. Could you give me the website for that?
Thanks
There are many good vocabulary textbooks available, depending on your level and needs. It’s best to go to a bookstore or library when you’re not in a hurry and find the book you feel the most comfortable with. In that way, you will feel like studying more often. Online, you could search for “English expressions” or “English transition words”. Welcome to engvid, Him Sreng. I wish you all the best.
I need more help on this.
ohhaa I have not done well it bcouse I get 4 out of 10 but it will be well .

And when i was checking you comments i noticed that you answer to some comments. It is great and interesting-in my opinion-that you communicate with your students.I think your action makes us want to learn more and increases our self-confidence.Thank you again and please continue this good action.
Welcome to engvid and thank you for your kind feedback. Please explore the many sections of our site to find the lessons you need. Your English seems to be quite advanced, so do check out our lessons at intermediate and advanced levels. I wish you all the best, nkh.453.
Sorry,I maked some mistakes:when I was checking your comments…
Rebecca, thank you so much for such a crystal clear explanation. This video presented a different viewpoint which most exam-takers have overlooked it; as they have never been an examiner before.
Although a good structure is needed in order to get a high score, there are several things in which you should concern about, otherwise you can lose marks easily. The correct use of punctuation and spelling, for example, can greatly increase your scores; what I heard from the video challenges me to practice those more.
Thanks very much for your detailed feedback. Yes, all these small elements can make a big difference to the quality of our writing and our score on essays, tests, or exams. Your English is clearly quite advanced already, so congratulations on that, and also on having such a positive, determined attitude to keep on improving. My best wishes to you, Ammy Yourcat.

Thanks to all for your comments. My goal in this lesson is to help you realize the many elements that contribute to a high score. Getting a good score doesn’t happen by chance. It’s because we pay attention to the small details and the bigger structure as we write. I wish each of you the very best.

Hello! My score was 8/10. It was good! The question about the word “successful”, it was hard! I know I wrote that word before, but it was very tricky question. The other question that I fall was the one about the winter. Brutal winter? I don’t like it. Rebecca, I like how you teach. I need to pass an assessment to get my license. Thank you for the lessons.
