Yeah my friend, you are right

There really isn’t a difference. The Carpenters song probably has “on the top” to make the words fit the tune. Slightly changing common expressions or grammar like this is common in English pop songs.

    engVid Moderator

Thanks for your reply. I’d been puzzled with that question for a long time. As a learner in a non-English speaking country, there’re always some questions left every and each day.

      FELES

    Hi Feles,

On top of the world is a feeling, while on the top of the world is a physical presence at the highest point of the world. The carpenters sing:
I’m on the top of the world lookin’ down on creation–firstly, it’s a dream. Secondly, ” You’re the nearest thing to Heaven that I’ve seen”, so this person is dreaming that he/she is literally above the world looking down at it (as though from heaven).

That said, as the moderator mentions, lyrics often get twisted to fit a tune.

    Hope this helps :)

    Adam

Thanks so much, Adam! I hope someday I’ll get those subtle differences. Long way to go…

      FELES

You have a lot of videos and im a new member with and the others so what’s your advice for me i wanna watch them all but they are too many

      moses.7s

Hi Adam .
Thank you for this lesson .
I havé been mistaken on question 3 . However can I say ? : “place the book on the shelf on top of the tv” meaning that the tv is actually on the shelf and the book will be put on the TV set .
I heard you explain in the vidéo talking about expectation : ” hé has gone above my expectation ” shouldn’t you have used “over” instead of “above” in that case .
Waiting for your comment .
See you

tsamp

    Hello tsamp,
you use “above” because it is an relation between the cups. If you use “over” the cups have to move…
But I was mistaken too in this question. I thought that on top of is the correct answer, because the touch.
    Have a nice day

    panda7

    Hi Tsamp,

A shelf usually hangs on the wall. The shelf above the TV means that it is protruding from the wall and hanging higher than the TV. If there was a shelving unit (furniture with many shelves) then the shelf would still be above the TV because the TV would be on a lower shelf. If the shelf is on or on top of the TV, it is not a shelf but a piece of wood sitting on the TV.

    Does this help?

    Adam

    Sorry, forgot second part.

We say above and beyond my expectations, or over and above my expectations. Above has to be in there.

    Adam

Very clear ! A pleasure to learn English with you. Thank you.

beernaard

Thank you! Your lesson was great. I got 90 out of 100 i’m happy
You are the best teacher.

bakhtawarIbrahim

thank you very much :-)

Arthur

The last question was a little confusing because of the two ofs in the sentence :D I enjoyed the lesson a lot, a thing seems to be super easy, but then it turns out that I learned something new after all, thank you Adam, thank you all Engvid teachers :)

HubertPoland

Oops. That’s a typo. Thanks for pointing it out Gochaqueen :)

    Adam

I always mix these up , so it’s kinda good thing to use them interchangeably.
I confused with question 1 & 3 . i get the idea that the TV and the book shelf are in the same line , therefore we have to use above. Great lesson

positive_learner

Hi Adam, thanks for your lessons! I wanna ask you about two irregular verbs “fling”and “throw”.What the difference between them, and which one should be used in spoken language?

Supporter

    Hi Supporter,

Fling is more of a close toss, something light. Throw can be something further and heavier.

I’d avoid fling because these days it more commonly occurs as its noun form, meaning a short, meaningless relationship, affair. As flung, though, it is obviously more clear.

Excellent lesson Adam! you are always making a great job. Sometimes, we use these prepositions without knowing the reason why we are suppose to use them, and when we learn the grammar rules, it takes us to actually do it right. XOXO from Dominican Republic!

NOA1991

It has been a very interesting lesson to review some concepts which are very useful when you think about them, maybe I have doubted in the last question by writing the preposition “of” twice, I was confused with the answer “on top of” but I suspected what it was the right answer, it was evident. Thanks a lot, teacher Adam, as always a very great explanation.

angardiobel

Hello angardiobel. How’s every thing going?
In few days ago, I thought you’re a new member, but Today when I was reviewing previous lessons and comments,I noticed that you’re not new! If you can remember and check previous comments you will see that we talked together. We talked about your goal, expensive exam and speaking skill. What do you do with your goal and exam? Now, Do you feel better when you wanna speak English?
By the way, I will be happier if you join us,Nataanna,SKIKDA and me. We can talk together and improve our english. Ofcourse in engvid.Good Bye.

    nkh

Yes, of course, I am here to learn and improve our English level and skill by helping other mates to achieve the same acknowledge. Every time I have listened to our teachers, I have realised that I have been climbing my trust to speak conversations and tell stories. It’s a great idea to make a team and interchange posts or comments, but we should have spare time to write and speak among us, and sometimes is difficult to gather with other mates here or in Skype because there are different schedules or local times on every part of the earth. I eager to join us and speak in English, speak with fluency is the subject I want to work with intensity and training, it is my main goal to get a job as a pilot in aviation. Thanks for your answer, nkh, I appreciate it. Regards.

      angardiobel

Good night friends. Having answered all questions correctly, I don’t feel myself on top of the world, but I’m satisfied. The last question was a booby trap (fansy expression; I have heard it after Kotoz, I liked it). But I jumped over it successfully.
Thank you, Adam, for this lesson. It’s above my expectations as always.

This lesson is on top of the other lessons, very useful. I believe that over 20 people have already seen it. And, I can see that the every comment is above another one. I had to put my hand over my mouth several times while watching this video but, I learned a lot!!
Thank you ery much for this lesson, sometimes I overstimate my knowledge of English and this is a good way to remember it. It was above my expectations and learnt how to use above and over.

Finally, I have to say that in the quiz, question number 10 was not well stated, in the quiz you have the final part of the sentence like this “….of the world.” of course I was confused because if I chose “on top of” it would end like ” on top OF OF the world” so I changed my answer and of course it marked it wrong. Not fair!

manuelacorredorb@gmail.com

I did the same error , but actually one needs to repeat this lesdon twice to understand and memrise it:-D

    Hi Manuela,

Yes, #10 has a typo. I will try to fix it right away.

Hello, Adam. Could you please answer my question. How should we pronounce the possessive s ending with plural nouns – [s] or [iz]. Thank you.

Emma Jane

    Hi Emma,

It depends on the ending of the noun:

    people’s (z)
    friends’ (z)
    fleet’s (tz)
    mice’s (iz)
    chips’ (s)
    etc.

Could you explain to me ,please, if I can use ‘over’ with time expressions like ‘I’ve been living here over sixteen years’?
Thanks!

koroleva674

    Hi Koroleva,

In this example, over means more than. It is also a reduction of “for over sixteen years”. This is common, but you should avoid it in writing.

Good day Mr.Adam and All.
My English not good but I try ))))
I have a question, maybe not for topic, but all the same.
How do translated nouns which followed one by one? Example : star track, sky bus, dog cat)) .. etc.I know that first noun must be adjective, but How about else? Example “information security ” , it means “protection of something (somebody) from harmful, unsafe (malware) information” or “protection of information from hacking, a loss”. (На русском “информационная защита” или “защита информации”).
Thank You.

SirSergey

    Hi Sergey,

Compound nouns work as a unit where one word modifies the other. The first word might be an adjective for the first or the second noun can mean “about” the first word, or the ‘type’ of first word.

Information security– type of security is one that protects information.

Is this what you had in mind?

    Adam

      Yes
      Thank You so much.

Hi, Adam! (Is the comma correct?)

Congratulations for your new video again! It is quite interesting and helpful!

By the way, I would like to do a question about a different topic. I am puzzled about the pronouns. Should I say “My girlfriend and I” or “My girlfriend and me”? Could I say “Me and my girlfriend” or “I and girlfriend”?

My main problem is how to identify part of speech in a sentence.
Please I need an agent assistance.

thank you

Amos933

why don’t we use “Hovered over”
the helicopter is moving

yaninS.

Hi Adam,

I am confused about question #1.
I chose “over” but the answer was hovered “above” the scene” since the helicopter did stay in one spot above the accident, according to your explanation.

However, I consulted yahoo online dictionary (https://tw.dictionary.yahoo.com/dictionary?p=Hover)
and found out that it put the following sentence as an example regarding the word “hover”:
The helicopter hovered “over” the house .

It uses the prep. over other than above here. Can you help clarify the differences between “hover over” and “hover above”?
Thanks.

Dawai

    Hi Dawai,

If it’s moving, then use over. If it stays in place (which is usually the use of hover), then it is above. It’s a subtle difference and in most cases no-one will notice the difference.

Hello Adam, Thank you for your lesson. This is my first time. I`m a beginner. I`ve a question, how can I take an order for my English learning.

Regards.

HilderL

    Welcome HilderL :)

I’m not actually sure what you mean by take an order. Do you mean how to order the learning itself?

Start with basic grammar rules about basic sentence structures, verb tenses, and pronouns. Then get into more complicated structures.

      Hi, Adam, Good Morning
It must be difficult to teach who does not know anything. I appreciate your attention.
I’m such a beginner that I must have been rude to my ignorance, sorry.
So, There is much to study and read.
I can´t tell if it was good, it seems to have a lot of repetition ‘on’ the “ON”, as if it were ‘on’ google searching ‘on’.
As it is a path, I will walk “on top of” it =]

First of all, I’d like to say I can’t believe I’ve found a teacher like you. You’re brilliant! Thank you for that! :) One more thing – if everyone speaks English so clear as you do, all the people in the World would be very happy! :)
As for the lesson, it helped a lot.
But, my question is about another thing. The grammar teaches us we must use the pronouns ‘he, she and I’ with the verb ‘to be’ in the past simple like this – I was, she was, he was. Right? But, there’s a ‘he were’ in your sentence (the last question in the quiz). Why’s that? Is it also common to use?

Many thanks in advance!!!!

I didn’t expect that I would score above my expectation. Is my sentence structure correct?
Thank you, teacher Adam.

For number 3, I think “on top of” can also be used if you are talking about a shelf that is like a cabinet, not the portruding one.

” Please place the book on the shelf -above- the TV.”

why we didn’t use “on”? If the book on the TV, they are touching each other.

Thank yo

Hi Adam, that was very helpful.

One thing is bugging me right now. When you have to talk about car registration plate number position, what is the correct preposition to use? Is it front and back of the car | on the front and back of the car | in the front and back of the car? I hope, you understood my question.

MahendraThulu

Thanks for the lesson Mr. Adam, I got 9/10. I hope you have a good life for your entire life

I’ve just finished the quiz with 70% of correct answers, i think i’m going to need to watch again and again. I think that it would be good if you explain about prepositions of movement with some verbs. Thanks for the lesson.
