How about the expression “Cash a check” Alex? Is it still in used in Cadada or The States? Technology changes almost everything, even language.

“Every month I go to the bank to cash my check and pay some bills in Mexico City. But I have to “pay a comission” because I’m not a bank client; I mean. I do not have a bank account.

Once I opened an account; no sooner had I done so than the bank issued a debit card. I am not interested in plastic money because I don’t want to take chances, so I cancelled it. As you know, your bank card can be cloned at practically any time. To make matter worse, plastic money is not always available for you. So, what’s technology good for?”

By the way Alex, do the words comission, cancel, and client belong to this particular context? Did I use them properly?

Finally, what do you call all those things that you can do in a bank? “Bank operations / transactions”?

Hey Regino,

The things you do in a bank are called transactions. Client and cancel definitely belong in this context. I haven’t heard of paying a commission to a bank, though. To me, a commission is something a sales person who works for a company makes when they make a successful sale. (Ex. “I make 5% commission from every sale.”)

As far as I’m concerned “commissiom” can be applied to a bank too. Does Americans call it “bank interest”? By the way what is standard bank interest in Canada and USA?

It was a great and useful lesson. In your talking and also along the quiz you have used the term “savings account.” At first it seems weird because the word “savings” works as an adjective, so I looked it up and I saw there is an expression to that in my language that is very close to that related to “saving account.” In English, do these two expressions can be used interchangeably?

Yes, you can use both phrases. However, if you just use the word alone, you should use “savings.” Example: “My savings are low.”

The correct terminology is definitely “joint.” I’ve never seen “joined account” listed on anyone’s bank statements. :)

My.username.already.exists.

You get a debit card from your bank to pay for things from your chequing account, and you get a credit from Visa, Mastercard, etc.

One quibble. The first question on the quiz asks if one stands “in line” or “on line,” and it answers “in line.” That’s correct, if one isn’t in the Northeast United States. However, there — perhaps most notably in NY City — one always stands “on line,” never “in line.”
