Hallo Benjamin,

how formal/informal are all the expressions ?

I think, the expression ” to keep a tab on sb ”
must be very informal and I can´t use it in the formal essay.

On the contrary, ” to ascertain” ist really very formal an I it can not be used in a informal e-mail.

I am right ?

Hello Mr Benjamin! How do you do!
Many thanks for the lesson! I watched the film “Meet the parents” and can again to feel an atmosphere of the movie. By the way, it was a comedy, and am thinking we haven’t to fear these ugly words. When I have taking quiz, some new ideas came to my mind. I need to some one who will be monitored me, and do other unpopular job, as to supervise my English study, to ascertain my time wasting.
I don’t sure, maybe I am so anarchist. Someone would keep your eye on me. So, I want to say: I will not to be under control, oversee and “a close check”.
I hope to find more optimistic video on engVid!
P.S. I am terribly sorry, if I wrote something uncorrect.

Hello and thanks for your lesson. I am so sorry but I can’t understand the meaning for ascertain, or i am confused about a certain Vs ascertain. Could any one explaint to me? Thanks in Advance.

the difference between the both word is very simple, certain is the adjective and ascertain is his verb (make sure of). I’ll give an example:
* i ascertain you that i didn’t talk with him since one month.
*If you want a certain party to win, it is better that you persuade many others to vote for them than vote yourself.
now,i hope that you understood the difference, and you will be able use them in your English communication.
