I think my country is an exception because English people speak always about ‘The Netherlands’ even though they not mean our whole Kingdom but only the part in Europe!?
And when you will speak the whole name of my country you see ‘The’ twice:
THE Kingdom of THE Netherlands.
But you don’t say: The Kingdom of THE Sweden or The Kingdom of THE Great Britain and THE Northern Ireland it is just THE Kingdom of Sweden and THE Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Why it is? (We are special: JEAH!!!! :P )

One interesting case is “The Republic of The Congo”.
“The” before “Republic” is the same case as with states.
But why there is “The” in front of “Congo”?
What I think, this is because “Congo” means “Hunters” in congo. So, it looks like “The Republic of The Hunters” and in this way it’s same case as “The Republic of The Philippines”.
Am I right?

I know there is a river called The River Gambia in the West African country called Gambia. However, I have heard people using Gambia and The Gambia interchangeably when referring to the country. For example, I have heard people say “He is from Gambia or He lives in The Gambia” when the country is only one and not many as in the case of the United States. What is the right way to use this tiny West African country in a sentence?
