In this lesson, I will teach you eight expressions in English that have to do with your tongue. The tongue is a funny pink organ in your mouth that allows you to taste delicious food and other tongues. Though we know it as a part of the body, we also use the word “tongue” in several expressions in English. Here are some examples: “Has the cat got your tongue?”, “silver tongue”, “bite your tongue”, “on the tip of my tongue”, and “speak in tongues”. The eight expressions you will learn in this video are commonly used by native English speakers. You might have even seen or heard them in movies, books, and in conversation. English may not be your mother tongue, but learning new expressions is a great way to improve your speaking and comprehension.
Thank you Ronnie. Do you also use the phrase ‘tongue in cheek’ ? Would you give me an example, please?

“I know her – her name is on the tip of my tongue, but it won’t come to me.”
Iva Marinho
Hi Ronnie! We use several of this phrases in Spanish like “Has the cat got your tongue?” but here are the mice not a cat: Did the mice eat your tongue? “bite your tongue” is very commonly used as well “on the tip of my tongue”, literally traduced. Mother tongue (and why not father tong) are also used, actually I’ve two mother (and father) tong, Spanish and Ukrainian. Thanks for this lesson!
Jorge
Hello, Jorge! After the watching this lesson I’ve looked for idioms with ‘tongue’ in my native languages (Belarusian or Russian) and remembered idiom ‘Tongue will bring you to Kiev’. As I see in your comment, Ukrainian is one of your mother tongues, so you must know it! It’s very interesting. Maybe you know the origin of this idiom?
NataEV
Hi NataEV. I didn’t hear this proverb before but, you know, there are many proverbs in all languages, in Ukrainian also. After searching a bit in Google and I found this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g43IfjgyDLM in which the author explains that the proverb you mentioned could has two possible uses: the tong can head you anywhere or it can get you in trouble.
Jorge
Thank you for the answer and for sharing the link, I never heard about the long version, but it is completely changes the meaning.
In the comments below I’ve share some idioms that are used in Belarus and translate them into English, maybe you will be interested. Of course, some of them can be similar to another languages’ idioms.
NataEV
I don´t like the way you speak about avenagelists. You are worong about your remarks about them. Because not all people are the same and not all evangelists are the same. I am evangelists and we don´t ask for many to anyone.
